The weak U.S. economy -- reflected in the nation's currency -- does offer a bit of an upside. The U.S. dollar has lost so much value compared with the euro that European auto parts makers -- and even automakers -- are moving some of their purchasing, engineering and manufacturing to the United States, or countries with currencies closely tied to the U.S. dollar.

When New York City wanted to make the biggest purchase of subway cars in U.S. history in the late 1990s, more than 3 billion dollars worth, the only companies that were able to bid on the contract were foreign. The same problem applies to high-speed rail today: only European or Japanese companies could build any of the proposed rail networks in the United States. The U.S. has also ceded the high ground to Europe and Japan in a broad range of other sustainable technologies. For instance, 11 companies produce 96% of medium to large wind turbines; only one, GE, is based in the United States, with a 16% share of the global market. The differences in market penetration come down to two factors: European and Japanese companies have become more competent producers for these markets, and their governments have helped them to develop both this competence and the markets themselves.

San Antonio - The University of Texas at San Antonio's Center for Advanced Manufacturing & Lean Systems (CAMLS), housed in the College of Engineering, recently partnered with the San Antonio Manufacturers Association and held a one-day Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Workshop.
RFID is an automatic identification technology that stores and remotely retrieves data using devices called RFID tags or transponders. RFID tags are objects that can be applied to or incorporated into a product, animal, or person for the purpose of identification using radio waves.
The move towards RFID technology continues to rise in both the retail and manufacturing sectors. In 2005, Wal-Mart mandated that all its top suppliers have RFID tags on pallets carrying products delivered to all Wal-Mart Distribution Warehouses. Now more manufacturers are implementing RFID systems into their distribution systems.
