AMESBURY — A long, rusty metal beam has fallen from the Interstate 95 bridge, and a review of the structure shows at least three other spots where beams on the 57-year-old span are missing and may have fallen into the Merrimack River.
Rusted and bent metal plates on the underside of the bridge indicate where the T-shaped beam — about a half-inch thick, 6 inches wide and 30 feet long — was once attached to the bridge. The beam now sits on a grassy patch alongside the river, about 80 feet below where it once was.

A coproduct of ethanol production could be used as a non-petroleum-based filler in plastics, based on preliminary studies by Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists and their cooperators.
The ethanol coproduct, called distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS), has a high fiber content and a molecular structure suitable for binding—two attributes that make it a candidate as a filler in plastics, according to ARS agricultural engineer Kurt Rosentrater.

Washington: A company is designing and testing the installation of a prototype airless tire that can withstand extreme punishment, even those meted out in military combat zones. The tire is being developed by Resilient Technologies, LLC, along with the UW (University of Wisconsin) - Madison Polymer Engineering Center and the US Department of Defense, to boost the security of vehicles in combat. The research will aim to develop a non-pneumatic tire for use on heavy-grade military vehicles such as Humvees. The project could literally be a lifesaver for the military. For example, in many situations in Iraq, tires have proven to be weak links in Humvees that enemies target with improvised explosive devices, or IEDs.

EDMONTON - Nap Pepin's Sherwood Park home is a gallery of technological inventions from built-in stereo systems in his cabinets to a customized remote control that scrolls through channels and music playlists at lightning speed.
"I'm such a geek," he said with a laugh, showing off a homemade arcade helicopter game that deploys fake bombs and contains light and sound effects.
But his newest creation -- a sleek, white, lithium-powered electric vehicle -- has turned heads and attracted smiles and thumbs-up signs from strangers.

Engineering and medicine still remain popular choices for students in India, but a quiet initiative is underway to get recognition for a subject of study that’s increasingly gaining prominence in industry, but remains neglected in academics — design.
“Design is a creative course that looks at constant innovation and new ideas. It provides the student with a variety of skills,” says Ravi Poovaiah, co-ordinator of the Industrial Design Centre (IDC), IIT Powai, which is planning to send a proposal to the Ministry of Human Resources Development to allow introduction of design as a subject of study at the undergraduate level in art colleges across the country.

Irish companies need to do more to identify expansion opportunities in other markets, raising the prospect of an increasing number of Irish people working abroad according to Stephen Hughes, director of northern European markets for Enterprise Ireland (EI).
‘‘Ireland Inc is shooting itself in the foot by not being in some markets,” he said.
‘‘France, for example, is not a difficult market to get into. There are 51 clusters of industry there and the scale of opportunity is huge - you just need to know how to access it. Scandinavia is open to niche players like technology companies. The Dutch, as masters of trade, are amenable to all and Benelux is a logical progression after Britain,” he said.

Casey Litaker has been living an aerospace engineer’s dream the last five years, designing the most technologically advanced commercial aircraft ever built.
Litaker heads the engineering team at Vought Aircraft Industries in Dallas that has played a major role designing and developing the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. It’s the kind of opportunity that might come along only once in an engineer’s career.
"I remember starting out on the B-2 [bomber] 25 years ago and thinking, 'This is aviation,’ " Litaker said. "Then nothing like that came along until this."

THE good times are back for the North East’s offshore industry as Karen McLauchlan reports. TEN years ago, the region’s offshore industry was hanging by a thread and the future looked desperate. Order books were empty, yards were closing and hundreds of workers faced joining the dole queue. Today, the picture could not be more different with the sector “transformed” in the last decade, according to industry leaders. New projects are up and running, securing new investment and creating new jobs. While the sector is thriving globally – so are developments closer to home.
