Design and CAD
Many of the major advances we have made in recent times have a lot to owe to the power that today's modern design and CAD systems offer us engineers.  Today we live in an exciting world where are are almost limited only by what we can imagine.

3-D Printing Brings Prototyping to the Home

Imagine designing a component on a computer and having a prototype emerge from your printer. 3-D printers and desktop manufacturing technology are making this an affordable reality.
Streamlining product development and prototyping processes has always been one of the main challenges of industrial design. The branching, multi-stage efforts involved in transforming a concept into a tangible product are often beyond a do-it-yourselfer's reach. But with the advent and rapid expansion of desktop manufacturing and 3-D printing systems, design engineering is being brought into the home.

Pictures in the Cloud

When you log into Autodesk’s Project Showroom , you see a 3D scene, a fully rendered kitchen or bathroom. You see light bouncing off the marble counter’s smooth surface. You see the sheen of the polished wood-cabinet doors. It’s the kind of photorealistic rendering that would require an hour or more to produce, even with a professional workstation or a supercharged desktop. So you might be surprised to find that when you randomly choose a different tile for the floor or a new refrigerator from the material panel, the scene updates in about five seconds with the new object, complete with raytracing effects.

How Designers Can Deliver Service With a Smile

I've got a theory about service design: Great design will never save bad service, but great service will always save bad design.

I say this with a certain level of confidence as I fly from Seattle to Atlanta in seat 31D (yes that's way down in the back and stuck in the middle). I'm uncomfortable, restrained, claustrophobic and bored. I'm forced to wonder, why when so much of the world's service provision has innovated over the past 20 years, the airline economy seat remains devoid of any meaningful improvement?

Design a process, not a result

The iPod or the Zune, a Citroen or a Nissan, the GSB MBA or the GIBS MBA? Why do we weigh up these options? Because all of us know that there is something at stake. Implicit in our questioning is the belief (or maybe hope) that one thing is better than another — we are pondering the value of design.

Design has always been important for human beings. In all kinds of ways it makes up the world we inhabit. From the cars we drive and the roads we drive on, to the phones we talk on, the coffee we drink, the schools we attend and how we search the web, it is all underpinned by design — good or bad.
