Design and CAD
Many of the major advances we have made in recent times have a lot to owe to the power that today's modern design and CAD systems offer us engineers.  Today we live in an exciting world where are are almost limited only by what we can imagine.

SpaceClaim's Unique Role in Engineering Software Ecosystem

Chris Randles and Blake Courter of SpaceClaim have certainly managed to shake things up, from their initial introduction to the market with direct modeling, their tongue in cheek Twitter plugin, and now their demonstration of the potential use of multitouch manipulation in 3D modelling
This is a company that is clearly set out to change the status quo, and has succeeded in doing so. Other than shaking things up,though, where is the unique value that SpaceClaim offers, and why do they believe there is room in a consolidating CAD market for a new entrant?

Design Thinking Out Of The Box

While definitions vary , design thinking usually involves a period of field research — usually close observation of people — to generate inspiration and a better understanding of what is needed, followed by open, nonjudgmental generation of ideas. After a brief analysis, a number of the more promising ideas are combined and expanded to go into “rapid prototyping,” which can vary from a simple drawing or text description to a three-dimensional mock-up. Feedback on the prototypes helps hone the ideas so that a select few can be used.

Automation and the smiley face of death

The pervasive trends of manpower reduction and the shift toward the use of foundry services have created a new set of challenges for designers attempting to bring a prototype design to reality. The manufacturing-transfer process has gone from one with engineering oversight to one of almost complete automation. Although this automation allows for consistency in data structure and format and represents an attempt at minimal conformance to a set of design rules, it does not necessarily account for engineers' waivers and designers' assumptions and interpretation of the rules.
