Design and CAD
Many of the major advances we have made in recent times have a lot to owe to the power that today's modern design and CAD systems offer us engineers.  Today we live in an exciting world where are are almost limited only by what we can imagine.

Students Design Device That Will Help in Water Rescues

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Administrator
The new machine, designed and built by WKU electrical engineering students Kory Liszt and Jack Wallace, is called a submersible remotely operated vehicle , and its makers plan to see their creation used by the Warren County Rescue Department for underwater searches.

"This will have a definite impact on the community and may help save lives someday," said WKU electrical engineering professor Walter Collett.

Liszt and Wallace, both seniors, spent nearly two years working on the ROS, designing the mechanical and electrical systems as well as the power, control and video components on their own time.

The ROS eventually turned into their junior class project, and was developed for $4,000.

"I've always been looking for some hands-on experience because I feel that's how you learn the skills you need," said Liszt, 22, of Pleasanton, Calif. "It's been cool to see how this works in real-world applications."

Engineers design self-stabilizing electric bicycle

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Administrator
As every five-year-old knows, balancing on a bicycle is not as easy as it looks. But, as engineers know, getting a bicycle to balance by itself – without a human riding it – is even more difficult.
Despite the challenge, engineers from Keio University in Yokohama, Japan, are developing a self-stabilizing electric bicycle, one that can stay upright by itself while being propelled and steered by electric motors. Their ultimate goal is to create a sophisticated, high-performance bicycle that could serve as a convenient alternative to a small car.

UH students try to build the unbuildable

Clipped to the Drawing Board by David Singh
What would you build if it were possible to build anything at all?

That wild question bedevils architecture professors trying to give their students an appropriate challenge. 3-D design software and digital-fabrication equipment mean that the old rules no longer constrain their students. Walls need not be straight. Corners don't need to meet at right angles.

Recently, Ben Nicholson, a visiting critic at the University of Houston, suggested an idea to Joe Meppelink and Andrew Vrana, who teach classes in the brave new techniques. Why not have students reconsider a project that, 50 years ago, was far ahead of its time? Why not attempt to build a design what famously could not be built?

Design Philosophy

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Susan Decker
Many objects in daily use have clearly been influenced by science, but their form and function, their dimensions and appearance, were determined by technologists, artisans, designers, inventors, and engineers - using nonscientific modes of thought. Many features and qualities of the objects that a technologist thinks about cannot be reduced to unambiguous verbal descriptions; they are dealt with in the mind by a visual, nonverbal process. In the development of Western technology, it has been nonverbal thinking, by and large, that has fixed the outlines and filled in the details of our material surroundings. Pyramids, cathedrals, and rockets exist not because of geometry or thermodynamics, but because they were first a picture in the minds of those who built them.

V6 web service allows engineering firms to simulate factories

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Administrator
A new online service will enable small and mid-sized engineering firms to create digital simulations of their factories. It aims to help companies identify production bottlenecks and win new business from larger firms.

This is the thinking behind Dassault Systemes Delmia's (DSD) decision to make its V6 product lifecycle management software available both as a standalone product and a service.

V6 allows firms to build a detailed digital model of their factory. It captures machine and human activities and operating parameters as well as work and materials flows, and builds an animated simulation of a production line. Planners can zoom into any aspect of the line to check tolerances and try alternatives.

Concrete Innovation With Design Visualization

Clipped to the Drawing Board by jackson Browne
THE ADVENT OF TECHNOLOGY and digital lifestyles , increased globalisation, a boom in worldwide infrastructure and the impact on climate change and the environment are shaping the need for capacity and resources to accommodate rapid population growth, urbanisation and industrialisation.

Taking the architecture, engineering and construction sector as an example, a report released by BCI Asia in January 2008 highlights new building projects in Malaysia are expected to develop strongly in 2008. Statistics have shown that the development size of hotels and industrial projects is expected to boom over 50% by end of this year. On the other hand, the recreational projects are set to increase by a whopping 137%.

Such growth fueled by profound global trends has raised the stakes for success, requiring the nation to innovate in order to remain competitive and profitable. Today, design plays a fundamental role in driving successful innovation in many parts of the world, unlike the past when it was being seen as merely an aesthetic value- add. The evolution of the design field, which unleashes the integration of visualisation and intelligence into the design process, amplifies the function of design as a strategic tool for driving and delivering concrete innovation.

Glock Model 32

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Administrator
I feel lucky that during the course of my professional life span (about 26 years now) I've seen the evolution of several new handgun cartridges: the .40S&W, the .357Sig and the .45GAP to name a few. As a cynic I look at each in doubt until they've been proven "on the street". I also tend to measure them against what I consider to be the tried and true service cartridges - the 9mm and the .45ACP. This week I'm reporting on my test work with the Glock Model 32; Glock's mid-size version chambered for the .357Sig cartridge.

University of Michigan Office of Technology to showcase inventions

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Administrator
At first glance, University of Michigan researcher Jay Guo's invention just might look like a small newspaper printing press.

But look closer, he said, and you'll see a machine that can continuously imprint tiny computer chips with information nearly as easily as a compact disc burner writes on a CD.

The U-M electrical engineering and computer science professor's hope is to bring down the cost of making the chips. The same technology can be used to more easily make solar panels and LCD screens.

"We want to perfect this technology and find more and more applications for it," Guo said.

Retro trend reaches realm of bicycle design

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Administrator
Looking into the future is easy to do at autumn bicycle trade shows when manufacturers highlight their new products. A new trend is now emerging - the retro look is honing in on bicycle design.

"The retro trend in bicycle design so far has been on the fringes, but you can certainly assume that it will continue and gain impetus," said Andre Glaeser of Germany's bicycle club. Siegfried Neuberger, director of Germany's two-wheeler industry association, agrees.

Glaeser reports that more and more people are engaged in constructing mountain bikes with classic components. Similarly, in the area of racing bicycles, styles from the 1960s and '70s are attracting new followers.

A bicycle known as the Cruiser shows that manufacturers are following the retro trend. This bike has simpler but sought-after engineering because it borrows from old motorcycle design.
