Design and CAD
Many of the major advances we have made in recent times have a lot to owe to the power that today's modern design and CAD systems offer us engineers.  Today we live in an exciting world where are are almost limited only by what we can imagine.

AliasStudio 2008: Designer Software

AliasStudio 2008 is a bit of an odd duck. It’s not really a CAD application like, say, Inventor or SolidWorks. Nor is it a 3D modeling and rendering application like Maya or 3ds Max. It occupies the rarified space between those applications, with considerable overlap in both directions. Who, then, is it for? If you’re a designer, it’s for you.

SolidWorks 2008

SolidWorks 2008 is nearly upon us and with a rapidly maturing market, can the developers find room for enhancements and improvements in their core application?

Software creates parametric CAD models

Inus Technology Inc is releasing Rapidform XOR2/Redesign, which the company claims is the only 3D scanning software that creates parametric CAD solid models.

Offering more than 200 enhancements and new functions compared with the previous release, XOR2 automates processes and is said to provide complete control of the 3D scanning workflow.

Online visualization of technical products

Web enabled 3D product configurators are one of the dreams of the internet age, because customers can assemble the products to their needs interactively and reduce costs. High visual quality and interaction are especially important for showcasing large products such as the Airbus A380 airplane.

Virtual Engineering Fosters Real Collaboration

New visualization software and hardware re-establishes that personal connection.

One advantage of physical prototyping is the design collaboration it fosters. Project and process engineers, stylists, managers and even customers can gather around a physical mockup and, from that grouping, opinions and input will naturally follow. However, physical prototyping is expensive and is being displaced by computer-generated simulations in many stages of the design process. While cost-effective, the collaborative element so helpful to design decision-making can suffer in the new age of computer-aided engineering.

IntelliCAD engine

progeCAD is a computer aided 2D & 3D design program. It's based on the IntelliCAD engine which just happens to be one of AutoCAD's most powerful challengers. Because AutoCAD is the most widely used professional CAD software on the market today, anything that competes in AutoCAD's sandbox has to be able to not only vie for attention in a difficult and entrenched environment, but also provide some incentives to move off the industry standard. ProgeSOFT is a serious company with a serious CAD product and offers extensive technical product support, so we decided to give progeCAD a heavy duty test. We reviewed progeCAD over a two month period in a busy architectural and industrial design studio. The results may surprise you.

CAD tutorials

Michael's Corner is a monthly publication written by Michael E. Beall, Autodesk Authorized Author and peripatetic AutoCAD trainer. Michael travels all over the USA, bringing his fantastic experience and great understanding of AutoCAD to his clients. Michael's Corner brings together many of the tips, tricks and methods developed during these training sessions for the benefit of all users.

Michael's Corner provides something for every AutoCAD user. Every month, a number of articles cover a wide range of topics, suitable for users at all levels, including "The Basics" for those just starting out. Essentially, the aim of Michael's Corner is to help all AutoCAD users work smarter and faster.

Modeling Tools for Designers

Yes,  I know that this is a software site,  but check out the gallery pages.  I think that they look pretty good.  What do you think ?
Are others doing it better?  let us know your thoughts

To be an effective designer today, you need tools to quickly develop your designs and accurately communicate them to everyone in the product research, development, marketing, and manufacturing or construction process.

CAD

Pro/Engineer has always been noted for capability rather than ease of use and even the company's Product Management VP, Michael Campbell said at the launch that - "Pro/Engineer is never going to be the easiest CAD system to use , out there"

Perhaps for this reason, knowing that once users get used to a particular CAD system,  they tend to stick with it, the company is bringing out a Free Schools Edition with a US launch in March 2006 and a Global roll out starting September 2006
