Design and CAD
Many of the major advances we have made in recent times have a lot to owe to the power that today's modern design and CAD systems offer us engineers.  Today we live in an exciting world where are are almost limited only by what we can imagine.

EVs offer design opportunity

Electric vehicles were one of the dominant features of this year's Frankfurt motor show. But unlike in 2007, nearly all the ones that were on show this year were very real runners. As an engineer, the future excites Tony Butcher who started in the car industry as an apprentice, gaining an MSc in engineering business management, before joining Rover.  He progressed through the ranks running major operations at Unipart and Benetton F1 before ending up at Prodrive in 1998.

Second-generation air-powered robot hand gets more sensitive

Accordions and robots don't seem to have much in common -- although an accordion-playing robot would make for a killer Weird Al song.

Robot Fish Inspired by Amazonian Knifefish

Researchers at the University of Bath have used nature for inspiration in designing a new type of swimming robot which could bring a breakthrough in submersible technology. Conventional submarine robots are powered by propellers that are heavy, inefficient and can get tangled in weeds. In contrast, ‘Gymnobot,’ created by researchers at the Ocean Technologies Lab in the University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, is powered by a fin that runs the length of the underside of its rigid body.

Google SketchUp: 3D visualisation made easy

When it launched in 2000, SketchUp provided new freedom for people who wanted to think imaginatively in three dimensions. Unlike the more “serious” design programs, it did not pin down the user to a degree of accuracy that was inappropriate at the birth of an idea. Dimensional accuracy and calculation of properties are frustrating, not enabling, when you are trying to be creative.

India seeks brains to crack coconut conundrum

It's a question that has left the best minds in India scratching their heads: how to harvest the coconut crop when no one either wants or knows how to climb trees any more.
But officials in Kerala, the southern agricultural state famed for laid-back tourism at its tropical beaches, are hoping new technology can be harnessed to solve the problem.

Design is critical in the medical sector

A key discussion theme at EPN’s third Plastics in Medical Devices conference, which took place in Brussels earlier this year, was the complex but vital interaction that must be achieved between device designers and their customers and suppliers if top quality products are to be brought to the market.

The Starck truth: Does British design need saving?

There's nothing , it seems, that Philippe Starck can't design, or rather redesign. From toothbrushes to motorbikes, from hotels to pasta, Starck has stamped his jaunty, clownish, almost exaggeratedly French personality on them all, becoming the world's most famous designer in the process. Now Starck is out to redesign possibly the only thing he has left untouched: design itself. In particular, Starck is on a mission to reinvent British design. Yes, the man who gave the world the rocket-shaped lemon squeezer is out to teach us Brits a thing or two – an act of Gallic gall that should have us spluttering into our Earl Grey.
