Electrical & Process Control
As things get bigger and more complex inevitably there is a greater need to monitor and control everything.  Get up to speed on the latest in how engineers are tackling these problems in electrical and process control.

More opportunities open for India electronics design

Design and innovation in electronic systems has always been prevalent amongst the engineering community in India, but was not always matched with growth in consumption of such technology. That has changed, and there is a tremendous growth to be served in the adoption of high technology in the industrial, medical, transportation, and energy management fields.

Being Methodical About Test Design

Manual software testing usually happens in one of two ways, using tests scripts prepared in advance and then executed rotely or exploratory where testers plan on-the-fly as tests are executed. In this article, James Whittaker argues that both techniques miss the mark and suggests a better way to think about manual test design.

PLC integration engineering improves machine builder options

Upgrading components in manufacturing process equipment is something that plant engineers take very seriously, and think through carefully. Equipment upgrade options are inspected and tested empirically before a selection is made. The newly modified machine must operate flawlessly to fulfill the requirements of the facility, and must integrate smoothly with other designated equipment within the plant. However, too often engineers end up settling with less capability from their new components solely because of compatibility issues with their control systems. These compatibility issues can bring the entire upgrade project to a standstill until a suitable solution is found.

The next big thing

Hewlett-Packard is counting on a novel design and its expertise in micro-scale manufacturing to help it break into the accelerometer market with a new generation of tiny motion sensors — and it’s counting on the low cost and high sensitivity of its product to expand that market dramatically.
Accelerometers, which measure vibration, shock or changes in velocity, have been in widespread use for years in a host of applications.
There are small, simple sensors that cost a dollar or less, like the chip that triggers your airbag in a car crash or tells your iPhone when to rotate the screen display. And then there are large, elaborate sensors that are used in sophisticated electronics such as aircraft guidance systems and sell for around $1,000 each.

Ind. coal-gasification plant cost reaches $2.5B

Duke Energy Corp. says the cost of the coal-gasification power plant it's building in southwestern Indiana has risen another $150 million, boosting the project's estimated price to $2.5 billion — nearly twice the original estimate.
And the latest increase won't be the project's last.
Charlotte, N.C.-based Duke Energy said in documents filed Tuesday with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission that the 630-megawatt plant's cost has gone up because its design has required more steel, piping, electric cable and other materials than originally expected.

IT majors keen to hire engineers from Detroit

Indian IT majors are making a beeline for Detroit, home to prominent American automobile brands like General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, to hire experienced engineers.
These engineers – a mix of foreigners and expatriate Indians – will help IT companies such as Tata Consultancy Services, Wipro, Infosys and KPIT Cummins strengthen their hold in specific areas of their engineering services outsourcing (ESO) practice.
The Big Three of the US auto industry – GM, Chrysler and Ford – have had a hard time during the economic slowdown and except for Ford, have gone in for dramatic restructuring. The net result is that many experienced engineers (who used to work in these auto majors) are now in the job market.

Little, big, and green: a biography of the solid-state disk

Faster and dramatically more power-efficient than rotating magnetic media, solid-state disks (SSDs) are one of the longest-awaited and most eagerly anticipated technologies in the past two decades of computing. The theoretical underpinnings of mass storage with no moving parts have been with us for decades, but the improvements that have put solid-state in economic and technological reach of ever larger segments of the storage market have been slow in coming. As the tipping point draws nearer with ever-increasing momentum, let's take a look back at the long journey to the practical SSD, and a look forward at the likely future progress of this technology.
