Xennia successfully develops new applications for industrial inkjet market

 
In January 2008 TenCate acquired 75% of the shares of Xennia Technology Ltd . near Cambridge (UK). The main reason for this acquisition is primarily to accelerate the opportunity to use inkjet technology to produce technical textiles. Inkjet technology has the potential to replace existing finishing and coating technologies and create new materials for the technical textiles sector.

Within the Digitex R&D project, which is subsidized by the EU Commission, TenCate, Xennia, Xaar and other companies and institutes have worked together in order to use inkjet technology to create breakthrough innovations in technical textiles for the European sector.

Jordan's first nuclear plant looms amid deals with Western powers

 
AMMAN - Jordan's first nuclear plant is looming in sight as it inked a preliminary nuclear cooperation deal with Britain on Sunday, the third one in a month with Western nuclear powers on pumping nuclear energy.

    Under the latest deal, Britain and Jordan will jointly promote "the establishment of a reliable source of nuclear fuel for future civilian light water nuclear reactors" in the Arab kingdom, said Chairman of Jordan Atomic Energy Commission Khalid Touqan.

Researchers develop new technique for fabricating nanowire circuits

 
Scientists at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), collaborating collaborating with researchers from the German universities of Jena, Gottingen, and Bremen, have developed a new technique for fabricating nanowire photonic and electronic integrated circuits that may one day be suitable for high-volume commercial production.

High-tech industry shows some growth, but future could be slow

 
The high-tech industry in Chicago has grown at a modest 1 percent rate and shows some signs of staying competitive, said a report that will be released today.

"Cybercities 2008: An Overview of the High-Technology Industry in the Nation's Top 60 Cities," compiled by American Electronics Association, or AeA, shows that Chicago's high-tech industry added 2,300 net jobs, for a total of 164,000 jobs, from 2005 to 2006, the most recent data available.

IDS Infotech betting big on aerospace design services

 
It's a special moment for Partap Aggarwal's software company and he just can't conceal his excitement. Brimming with energy, the 50-year-old managing director of IDS Infotech talks about the acquisition he’s just done of aerospace design firm BV Design Production Link (DPL) based in Rotterdam. “This is a huge accomplishment for us,” he says, explaining that when IDS began in 1990, its first tie-up was with a Dutch firm.

Alstom Cements Its Position as a Leading Provider of Conventional Islands for Nuclear Power Plants

 
Alstom is the world’s leading supplier of “conventional islands” (or “turbine islands”) for nuclear power plants, and has fitted close to 180 units around the globe. More than 30% of the world’s nuclear power stations operating today use Alstom-made equipment.

Siltronic and Samsung start joint production of 300 mm wafers in Singapore

 
Singapore - Siltronic Samsung Wafer Pte. Ltd. , a joint venture of Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Siltronic AG, today commissioned a new fab in Singapore for the production of 300 mm wafers. The facility officially started operation in an opening ceremony attended by Singapore´s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. After only 18 months of construction, Samsung Electronics, a leader in advanced semiconductor technology, and Siltronic, a subsidiary of Germany´s chemical group Wacker Chemie AG, now own one of the world´s largest and most advanced factories for 300 mm wafers

VLSI confab melds explorations of semi process, design issues

 
MANHASSET, N.Y. — The interdependence between process and design is in full evidence at this year's VLSI Symposia , being held June 17-20 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Symposium on VLSI Technology straddles the Symposium on VLSI Circuits. Microchip sets low-power record with extreme sleep mode

 
A low-power microchip developed at the University of Michigan uses 30,000 times less power in sleep mode and 10 times less in active mode than comparable chips now on the market.

According to Eurekalert, the news service of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Phoenix Processor, which sets a low-power record, is intended for use in cutting-edge sensor-based devices such as medical implants, environment monitors or surveillance equipment.

UTSA DEMONSTRATES RADIO FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION TECHNOLOGY AT MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING WORKSHOP

 
San Antonio - The University of Texas at San Antonio's Center for Advanced Manufacturing & Lean Systems (CAMLS), housed in the College of Engineering, recently partnered with the San Antonio Manufacturers Association and held a one-day Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Workshop.

RFID is an automatic identification technology that stores and remotely retrieves data using devices called RFID tags or transponders.   RFID tags are objects that can be applied to or incorporated into a product, animal, or person for the purpose of identification using radio waves.

The move towards RFID technology continues to rise in both the retail and manufacturing sectors.  In 2005, Wal-Mart mandated that all its top suppliers have RFID tags on pallets carrying products delivered to all Wal-Mart Distribution Warehouses. Now more manufacturers are implementing RFID systems into their distribution systems.

Memory boost

 
For nearly 40 years scientists have speculated that basic electrical circuits have a natural ability to remember things even when the power is switched off. They just couldn't find it. Now, researchers at Hewlett-Packard have proven them right with a discovery they hope will lead to memory chips that store more data but consume far less power than those found in today's personal computers and other digital devices.
