Electrical & Process Control
As things get bigger and more complex inevitably there is a greater need to monitor and control everything.  Get up to speed on the latest in how engineers are tackling these problems in electrical and process control.

Take Mystery Out Of Control Loops

Is advanced control-loop tuning a mystery? Some operators think so, observes Terry Blevins, principal technologist with Austin, Texas-headquartered Emerson Process Management’s (www.emersonprocess.com) DeltaV Product Engineering group. “They’ll tune a loop using some procedure and get good performance. But the next day, the same loop
operates differently.”

Virtual Reality: A Short Introduction

The term 'Virtual Reality' (VR) was initially coined by Jaron Lanier, founder of VPL Research (1989). Other related terms include 'Artificial Reality' (Myron Krueger, 1970s), 'Cyberspace' (William Gibson, 1984), and, more recently, 'Virtual Worlds' and 'Virtual Environments' (1990s).

Today, 'Virtual Reality' is used in a variety of ways and often in a confusing and misleading manner. Originally, the term referred to 'Immersive Virtual Reality.' In immersive VR, the user becomes fully immersed in an artificial, three-dimensional world that is completely generated by a computer.

Salamander robot's walk holds key to spinal study

Scientists have built an amphibious robot to simulate the movements of the first four-legged creature that emerged from the sea to walk on land some 400 million years ago.

The robot walks and swims like a salamander, the living amphibian that is thought to most closely resemble the first fish-like amphibians to walk on land.

Driver State Sensor - Research

The Seeing Machines DSS-R is a robust, automatic sensor platform that produces data for operator fatigue and operator distraction applications. The DSS-R is the first step towards vehicles that are ‘driver aware’.

Beer Launching Fridge

Have you ever gotten up off the couch to get a beer for the umpteenth time and thought, "What if instead of ME going to get the BEER, the BEER came to ME???" Well, that was how I first conceived of the beer launching fridge.

Bicycle security system

Bicycle thieves beware , technology being developed at the University of Leeds (UK) could be the answer to every cyclists nightmare.
By using a computer system, it is possible to detect individuals parking their bicycles and to automatically warn security staff if someone other than the owner removes the bicycle
PhD student Dima Damen, from the University’s Faculty of Engineering is developing the system. Dima says that

“It’s difficult to monitor CCTV cameras, as operators normally have a large number of screens to watch and this often results in bicycle thefts being missed, even if they are happening right in front of the camera.”
