USACE engineers in Europe LEED the way with green building projects

In today's economy , investing in sustainable design is a smart construction strategy.

According to a 2008 U.S. Green Building Council report, green buildings can save millions in annual operational costs, generate new jobs and reduce greenhouse gas production.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has championed this effort by creating a policy in January 2008 to implement Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, in Army military construction projects.

But designing and constructing certified "green" facilities in Europe is a challenge for USACE Europe District project and program managers, who are held to the German government's construction process under ABG 75, said Rich Gifaldi, sustainable engineering manager for the Europe District.

Could a Solar-Hydrogen Economy Supply All our Energy Needs?

TreeHugger has never been a fan of the hydrogen economy; the gas is more of a battery than a fuel as it takes a lot of energy to make the stuff. We have called it nothing more than a front for the nuclear industry.
But Derek Abbott, Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Adelaide in Australia, makes a persuasive case that it is perhaps the most effective medium for using and storing solar energy, and explains in Physorg..

'Green' can be an illusion in construction

Just 10 years ago , any reference to "green" in the construction industry would have translated to cash flow or the color of countertops. Today, that word is widely understood to refer to practices and products aimed at minimizing energy consumption and overall environmental impacts linked to constructing and operating buildings. Such practices and products are outlined in a number of green building programs, including LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and Minnesota Green Star.

A Liquid Design for Cheaper Fuel Cells

Platinum remains the best material for speeding chemical reactions in hydrogen fuel cells, although the scarcity and cost of this element keep fuel cells from becoming more affordable and practical. Most alternative approaches involve simply replacing the platinum in the electrodes. Now a U.K. company called ACAL Energy has overhauled fuel cell design to reduce the amount of platinum used by 80 percent.

HVAC manufacturer finds a cool solution with HVLS fans

McQuay International's Applied Air Systems division in Faribault, MN had a debilitating problem with regards to air movement within their plant: stale, stagnant air was leading to worker discomfort, severely affecting productivity. What this HVAC giant needed was fans, large 24-ft. diameter high volume low speed ceiling fans to improve air circulation and increase worker productivity once again.
McQuay, the world's second largest heating, ventilation and air conditioning company, has taken advantage of the ability to slowly move great volumes of air over large areas, reaching every worker on the production room floor.
