Massive hunks of roughly-cast metal sit on the gleaming floor of a Michigan factory, waiting to be cut into the hubs of wind turbines destined for Iowa. Aside from the dramatic increase in size, the process is not very different from making the parts that Dowding Industries supplies to automakers. Except for the fact that the company thinks there is a future in wind. |

LaunchPoint Technologies Inc . has won National Science Foundation (NSF) American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds to develop advanced control techniques for the operation of high-speed, high-efficiency, energy storage flywheels. Energy storage flywheels, such as LaunchPoint's 'Power Ring', provide bursts of power over short time periods and are currently being developed as a more cost-effective method for maintaining electric power stability in the face of outages, surges, and sags that typically last up to a few seconds. These disturbances in power have an enormous economic impact (estimates exceed $100 billion per year), interrupting business operations and causing inconvenience and safety concerns for millions of people. |

Mine shafts about to shut down do not have to be a burden; they may be able to provide geothermal energy to towns. A new method makes it possible to estimate the amount of heat a tunnel could potentially provide, said Rafael Rodríguez, from the University of Oviedo’s Higher Technical School of Mining Engineering in Spain. “One way of making use of low-intensity geothermal energy is to convert mine shafts into geothermal boilers, which could provide heating and hot water for people living nearby,” Rafael Rodríguez. This type of energy comes from the internal heat of the Earth. |

It seems like you can’t turn around without a company touting a new “green” initiative . What was once a fad has now become mandatory for manufacturers to not only maintain corporate responsibility, but to positively impact the bottom line. However, few companies look inside their own organization to see what they may already be doing -- or what small improvements they can make -- to save time, energy, resources, and in turn, help the environment. |

All good things come in threes. The first good thing was HansGo! back in 2003, followed by SolarWorld No. 1 four years later. Now, the Bochum University of Applied Sciences is presenting a new solar car, the BOcruiser. It's no surprise that BASF Coatings, supplier of the paint for the ultra modern vehicle, is pleased to be on board again with its Glasurit brand. After all, the model's predecessor SolarWorld No. 1 captured the design title of "World's most beautiful solar car" - and was also clad in a finish of Glasurit paint from Münster. |

Concern over access to clean water is no longer just an issue for the developing world, as California faces its worst drought in recorded history. According to state's Department of Water Resources, supplies in major reservoirs and many groundwater basins are well below average. Court-ordered restrictions on water deliveries have reduced supplies from the two largest water systems, and an outdated statewide water system can't keep up with population growth. |
