North American manufacturers consider the United States the most desirable country for expansion over the next three years, according to a survey released today by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) (www.nam.org), The Manufacturing Institute, the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) and Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu.
The largest number of North American companies (44 percent) say they intend to expand production in the United States over the next three years. 57 percent of U.S. manufacturers say they will become more globally competitive over the next five years across the supply chain from sales, marketing and customer service to engineering and information technology.

Corus Process Engineering (CPE) , part of Corus Northern Engineering Services (CNES), has successfully completed the manufacture and assembly of two, six-metre-diameter steel lifting girdles. These will be used to remove 400-tonne heat exchangers from the reactors at Calder Hall nuclear plant in Cumbria.

NEW YORK - Heavy equipment maker Caterpillar Inc . said Thursday it will invest $200 million over four years to boost manufacturing capacity in India, as part of its plan to increase its presence in the Asia-Pacific region.
Caterpillar will raise production of off-highway trucks made at its facility near Chennai, which are used for coal and other mining jobs in India.

There is this sort of belief floating around that the increasing costs of energy are going to drive increases in efficiency, and so this is a good thing.
This is a belief that is held by economists, tree huggers, joe public, and in fact just about everyone who isn't an actual engineer.
All it takes is US$200 bbl oil and Ford will stop making Suburban SUV's and start making Volkswagen Rabbits... The ONLY reason Ford don't make a VW Rabbit now is no one would buy one... allegedly... no engineer believes this for a second.

BERLIN, - If the U.S. economy slows, China suffers and so do the German firms that supply the Chinese with manufacturing machinery. Right? Not necessarily. Some German firms that supply Chinese industries with export exposure are indeed suffering as the U.S economic downturn lowers U.S. demand for Chinese products, and in turn Chinese demand for the German capital goods used to make them.

European producer of polyethylene bin liners and refuse sacks CeDo has spent £1.5m on a lean programme at its manufacturing facility in Shropshire, the UK.
CeDo said adopting lean techniques has allowed it to become more competitive while still maintaining overall performance and service levels.
The main focus of the programme has been to reduce waiting time and accumulation of product. This has led to the commissioning of bespoke conveying systems and two centralised packing areas within the manufacturing facility.

Moving cars is a piece of cake for the world's strongest robot. Built by KUKA, a large German robot-maker, Titan lifts 1,000kg and with its arm extended is as tall as a giraffe. It works out by moving huge concrete structures, steel-castings and pallets loaded with glass.
