Test bench: Turntables

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Yan Chu

Twenty-five years after the compact disc was launched, there is something of a buzz about the format it was supposed to replace – the humble vinyl disc . Sales of 7in vinyl singles have risen fivefold since 2001, according to the BPI, the record industry’s trade body, buoyed by trendy bands issuing collectable vinyl products and the continued high prices of CD singles, a nonsense in the era of the download.

Samsung work force declines first time in 5 years

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Barot Casha

Samsung says it's work force has declined, for the first time in 5 years, though it's not due to restructuring

The number of engineers and employees at Samsung Electronics has fallen for the first time in five years, the company said Monday, though it emphasized the reductions were not part of any broader restructuring.

Samsung had 1,630 fewer workers as of Sept. 30 compared with the total six months earlier, Samsung spokeswoman Lee Eun-hee said, citing figures reported last week to South Korea's financial regulator. She emphasized, however, that the work force reduction was natural and not part of a larger restructuring as suggested by South Korean media reports.

"It has nothing to do with downsizing," she said, adding that those who left did so voluntarily.

The world still trusts the good quality of China's products despite a string of recalls in recent months, a senior Chinese official said Monday.

Although recent months have seen a string of quality issues.

In July this year, the Chinese quality regulator said that nearly a fifth of the food and consumer products it checked in a nationwide survey this year were found to be substandard or tainted.

The broad sampling of foods, agricultural tools, clothing, women's and children's products and other types of goods turned up sizable quality and safety failure rates for products that are sold to Chinese consumers.

Smart Manufacturing,  Smart Engineering - more than one way to skin a cat --

As China continues its meteoric rise , life -- and commerce -- in America have become saturated with three words: "Made in China." The abundance of low-cost goods has made life less expensive, but as some critics argue, it has drained the country of factory jobs, as companies shutter plants and head east.

Nanomaterials will alter economies

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Ryan
Nanotechnology promises a range of new materials that are stronger,  lighter,  cheaper and in general just better than many existing materials.  You might think this is great news,  however to a lot of developing countries that depend on the export of materials that may soon be replaced this is worrying.  Nanotechnology offers engineers the ability to create materails with the precise characteristics they require.
