Toyota stays most reliable

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Bob Smith

You pay your money and take your choice - some very "eye opening" and suprising results directly relating to engineering quality

RELEASED this week, a 10-year study involving responses from 1.3 million owners ranks the most and least reliable cars in six categories. Conducted by the US group Consumer Reports, which operates the largest non-profit educational and consumer product testing centre in the world, the study shows Toyota has marginally dropped in reliability, but Ford has picked up.

Could vertical farming be the future?

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Barot Casha

This is a challenge which will get the engineers scratching their heads -

Rice on the seventh floor . Wheat on the twelfth. And enough food within an 18-story tower to feed a small city of 50,000.

Apple is definately doing something right

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Ryan
Apple is apparently doing great business at the moment.  Things look to only be getting better too.  I think a lot of their success is partly due to applying some characteristics to their products that us engineers hold close to our hearts.  First off is their continual striving for simplicity and consistency which shows in nearly all of their products.  They are constantly innovating in an effort to achieve this.  Next is their ability to do things the way they want rather than the way everyone else does things.  They are constantly pioneering new trends and changing the way we think.

I think engineers in general could learn a lot by looking at the practices of Apple.

Magnetic view from the moon

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Tony Elmasri

Leicester University has beaten off more than 80 competitors for NASA funding to develop an X-ray telescope that could be used on the Moon.

I'm really liking all the attention that space is getting lately.  It really moves engineering up to a whole new scale and I'm interested to see how it develops.

Videoconferencing's virtual leap forward

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Susan Decker

Perception is reality particularly when there is a need to communicate

PARIS: If I narrowed my eyes a little bit , I could convince myself that the people on the other side of the office table were in the same room. But they weren't: I was seated at a conference table near Paris, and they were in an office outside of London.

Lessons Learned from a Marine Expeditionary Force

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Ryan
The 46th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (under the administrative control of the 130th Engineer Brigade) recently served in one of the most unique command structures and diverse task organizations an engineer unit has encountered--joint and multicomponent--representing almost every facet of our nation's military. During this time, the Soldiers and leaders of the 46th learned many hard, valuable lessons and had many "outside the box" construction and combat engineering experiences. Such diverse units and organizational structures, with joint and multicomponent characteristics, are likely to be the rule rather than the exception in the future. This article shares some of the lessons learned and experiences from the unit's year in-theater.

Optical Illusions

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Ryan
There's no denying that optical illusions are fun.  But I think there's a lot of potential for them in the design of products.  Why not have a skim through these and see if any might be useful to you?

Toyota Loses Top Spot in Reliability Rankings

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Pat Sheen

I see it - but It's hard to believe - I'm sure that they will be working extra hard to regain that top spot from now on

DETROIT, Oct. 16 —The magazine Consumer Reports says that “bug-ridden redesigns” caused Toyota Motor of Japan to drop unexpectedly to third, from first, in its annual vehicle reliability rankings released on Tuesday.

Do aliens really exist?

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Administrator

Statistically,  I suppose yes they must.  Even so,  are they close enough to even reach us,  advanced enough to do so,  and even then would they really care enough to want to do so?

Well according to Edgar Mitchell the answer to all of those would be yes .  Which best the question,  if this is indeed the case then have any of our technological advances been borrowed from them?

As an engineer,  what would it be like to be able to discuss things with a technologically advanced race?

Simplicity rules, or does it?

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Ryan
Here's an interesting take on what the IPod packaging would look like if Microsoft were to tackle it .  As an engineer I've always liked the approaches that Apple takes to designing their products.  It would be great to see more people adopting their styles.

Beam me up: Just how close are we to teleportation?

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Adam Crighton

Way to go - sure beats the traffic hassles

LONDON, England (CNN)  -- Admit it -- at one point or another we've all dreamed of being able to teleport . How much easier and less stressful life would be if, at the flick of a switch, we could whisk ourselves direct from home to work without the intervening two hours crushed onto public transport, face wedged into the armpit of an overweight man with a sweat gland problem.

Midwest Utilities To Store Surplus Wind Energy Underground

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Ryan

To some people they are just big holes in the ground - but to others they represent a means of "doing it better" - innovation is the key

A new method of improving the efficiency of wind turbines is taking shape outside Dallas Center, Iowa. A group of local utilities is working out the issue of “how to store the excess energy windmills create when demand is low so it can be used later, when the need is greater.”
