Practice makes perfect, or close to it

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Ryan

Ever heard the saying:

In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.

Well the problem may be a lack of practice.  Things need to be trialed in real life rather than hypothetically to pick up on all the little things you didn't consider in the perfect world inside your head.

Communicating with non-engineer professionals and lay people

Clipped to the Drawing Board by John William

Communication occurs in a variety of forms and methods. It can be verbal, written, body language, sign language, electronically formatted, paper formatted, and even custom to groups or organizations. Effective communication leads to information exchange. Miscommunication at work may lead to disagreements, arguments, or potential legal action. Yet in any communication, it is assumed that the words, phrases, sentences, or expressions used will be interpreted as intended. But is that usually the case?

Thought much about your work/ life balance?

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Ryan
Engineers have a tendancy to become workaholics.  They also often have a liking for beer but that's another something we can talk about some other time.  The following article is a little light on info but can be a good starting point in realising where you may be going astray in organsing your work/ life balance.  If you do a Google search you can find a whole heap of useful material relating to this also.  Meditation may also be of benefit?

Close the skills gap

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Susan Decker

The struggle for talent is worldwide and technology skills are subject to vigorous competition. Only eight per cent of engineering and technical workers are female, so companies who want a skilled, experienced and diverse workforce should re-examine their policies and concentrate on recruiting more women.

Understanding uncertainty

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Barot Casha

An unusual concept for engineers - who are more accustomed to working with certainty -

What's the risk of passive smoking? Or climate change? How big is the terrorist threat? And should we trust league tables? These questions concern all of us , but it's not always easy to make sense of the barrage of media information

This had me worried !! but despite the rhetoric I still believe there are fairies at the bottom of my garden....

Engineers are an intelligent and skilled bunch , and I am also constantly surprised to find that they are also pianists and artists, and cultivate orchids and whatever.

Ethics, morality important virtues in any society

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Dillon Smatcher

Engineers can also take the time  to reflect on non material issues - (but not for too long)
