Make and mend

Inside JJ Churchill's engineering factory , the scene is one of controlled commotion as hightechnology machine tools turn out parts for diesel generators and aero- engines. The company, based in Market Bosworth, a small town in the English Midlands, was set up in 1937 by Walter Churchill, a pilot-cum-engineer who during the second world war flew Spitfires and Hurricanes from a landing strip next to the plant. The family can trace a link to Winston Churchill.

A&M Signs Giant Magellan Telescope Agreement

Texas A&M University , along with eight other astronomical research organizations from three continents, has signed the Founders’ Agreement to construct and operate the 25-meter Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) at Las Campanas Observatory in the Andes Mountains of Chile.

“We are poised to enter the age of the greatest advances in astronomy – the discovery of Earth-like planets capable of life, as well as the understanding of the origin and evolution of our universe,” said Nicholas B. Suntzeff, director of Texas A&M’s astronomy program and holder of the Mitchell-Heep-Munnerlyn Endowed Chair in Observational Astronomy in the Texas A&M Department of Physics. “ When we map the universe to its beginning or find that Earth-like planet, I want Texas A&M astronomers and physicists to be there making these discoveries.”

Let engineers make Britain great again

Orson Welles said film-making was the biggest electric train set a boy ever had. He was wrong. A new high-speed train line would be, if the boy or girl grew up to engineer it.

But in Britain, the train set is broken and has been packed away in the attic. We're not proud of industry and we certainly don't want our kids to grow up to be engineers. It's a tragedy. It never used to be this way. We need to rediscover the power of engineering, its impact and contribution. It can stimulate young minds and it can stimulate the economy.

World’s fastest car used to inspire tomorrow’s engineers

THE fastest car in the world is to be built in the United Kingdom. Not only will it attempt to break the land speed record but the project will also provide a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers”.

Known as Bloodhound, the new car will be raced in the Nevada desert and powered by a rocket bolted to a Eurofighter-Typhoon jet engine.

Croton dad turns inventor to spare daughters pain of tangles

Being a work-at-home dad offered George Stydahar many perks, from cooking breakfast for his two girls to being there when they got home from school. But brushing their hair in the morning was not one of them.

Both Hannah and Emma had long, fine hair, the kind that tangles easily. Every morning became a struggle between Stydahar's desire to send his daughters off into the world looking neat and well-groomed and his anguish over their shrieks of pain when the hairbrush caught on a snarl.
