Lacking 1950s luxuries, the elegant but old-fashioned 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300S Coupe was a sales flop More expensive than the 300SL sports car and almost double the price of a contemporary Cadillac, the Mercedes-Benz 300S was one of the world's most exclusive automobiles. Elegantly styled in the prewar manner, yet technologically up to date, the 300S was built to the Stuttgart firm's uncompromising standards. Such conservative luxury produced predictable results: Only 760 300S/Sc cars left the factory between 1951 and 1958.

With General Motors throwing in the towel on the gas-guzzling SUV’s and large pickup trucks, how long will it be before the other manufacturers follow suit? As the last Sierra drives off into the sunset, the Explorers, Rams, Tundras and Armadas will be giving their last burps on corny Ethanol as they pass the Hummers, Escalades and Aviators that have died of thirst on the roadside. The drivers of smaller vehicles will no doubt breathe a sigh of relief as the roadway ahead of them again becomes visible, no longer hidden behind the smelly tail end of these behemoths.

The auto industry suffered whiplash during May, as sales plunged for big pickup trucks and SUVs as $4-per-gallon gas prompted consumers to ditch their gas guzzlers in favor of more economical passenger cars.
The strong shift from trucks to cars reverses the trend of the past decade, and domestic automakers were caught with a huge surplus of unsold trucks. Industry analysts say that with gas prices expected to remain in $4 territory for the foreseeable future, the May truck-sales drop could signal the end of an era.

As automakers adjust to America's third oil shock , I hope they haven't forgotten one of the main lessons of the earlier tremors: Too much fuel economy might be almost as damaging as too little.
You build a new house after the earthquake, and an aftershock wrecks it. That's the scenario auto executives must keep in mind now as they watch customers abandon larger cars and trucks.

“Inspired by the power of the human mind, the fragility of the natural world and the magic of advanced technology”, Amory Lovins founded the Think-Tank Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) in 1982.
“Hypercar™” was one of his early projects; at first an idea, which became a plan that later developed into a company and is now revolutionizing a whole industry, perhaps more than that.
For more than a decade and a half, the staff of what now is Hypercar Inc, first defined a new way to design, and now, together with partners in industry, to build cars.
Rocky Mountain Institute proposes to build streamlined cars of ultra-light weight with a super-efficient drive-train.
It was a long time coming, but the Aptera (recent article) could surely be considered a “Hypercar”.

June 2008 - GM announces it will close its Oshawa truck plant , with production ending in 2009. The company cites skyrocketing oil prices and declining truck sales as factors in the decision, which will eliminate 2,600 jobs. Although one shift at the plant had already been cut, the other two shifts were supposed to continue on, working in alternating weeks, as the result of a recent collective agreement with the CAW.

IT'S NOT EASY BEING 100 . JOINTS HURT, BONES ACHE and the funeral director's eyes brighten when he sees you. Just look at General Motors, which will hit the century mark in September.
Last week, it announced that it's downsizing its labor force by 19,000 workers. Many believe that even that won't be enough to keep the auto giant from the grave. In fact, GM (ticker: GM) now has a stock-market value of less than $10 billion, a mere 1/16th the size of Toyota's.

The first warning signs are emerging that the business aviation sales "bubble" may be about to burst, but large swaths of the market remain unfazed, raising questions about whether a bubble even exists.
Amid an economic slowdown in the U.S. and high fuel prices worldwide, industry officials have been scanning for indications that the business aviation market will be impacted. "We do see signs of softening in Western Europe and North America. There has been a small increase in the used aircraft inventory," says Dassault Aviation CEO Charles Edelstenne.

Never mind hybrid cars - and forget hydrogen power - because the future of the automobile is electric, Nissan says.
The company's best engineering brains said last week the quest for environmentally sustainable private transportation in the coming decade will be plug-in, rechargeable electric cars.
Nissan is backing this thinking with a firm pledge: it will have an electric car in showrooms in the US and Japan in 2010, with a view to selling the cars globally in 2012.
