When American consumers start buying new cars again, they'll likely find fewer combinations of moon roofs, seat upholstery and stereo systems to choose from. As with better fuel economy, it's a case of U.S. automakers taking a cue from their Japanese counterparts.
A buyer of the 2008 Ford Fusion could choose from the various models and extra features available and come up with 2,600 combinations. For the 2010 version due in showrooms this summer, the number drops to 104. |

They are all dressed up but have nowhere to go. An avalanche of cash has been promised to the motor manufacturers, many billions of dollars, enough to finance a fleet of glittering new models, but it's probably too late.
Instead of producing jaw-dropping designs and awesome gadgetry, the money pile will dribble away in support of old factories turning out retro-fashioned cars powered by yesterday's technology. |

Bob Lutz's impact on General Motors ' future vehicle programs started within weeks of joining the automaker on Sept. 1, 2001.
He targeted GM's bland car styling, the result of cost cuts in the early 1990s when GM was considering a bankruptcy filing. He also arrived when the hideous Pontiac Aztek was the talk of the town. |

A San Francisco startup led by a former Tesla Motors engineer is developing an electric motorcycle capable of 150 mph, a claim that, if true, would make it the fastest production electric vehicle in the world.
Mission Motors unveiled the bike, dubbed Mission One, at the TED conference and said it will begin selling them next year for $69,000 apiece. Although several electric motorcycles have been announced in recent weeks, Mission Motors sticks out because its 12 employees have worked for Tesla, Ducati North America and Intel, and the bike they're building could set a new benchmark for EVs of all kinds. |

The first time we saw this bike, we thought, "What the hell is that?!" We're serious; we thought it was under construction. After my initial reaction, though, I began to look at the complexity and detail of every component. After looking around the show for a couple of hours, we kept coming back to this one bike. |

The two months that Boeing machinists spent on the picket lines late last year helped push 2008 revenues and earnings well below those of the previous year and exacerbated the company's struggles with organizational sluggishness and a critical shortage of engineers.
The full-year cost of the strike on earnings was $1.8 billion, including a 15% reduction in revenues at Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA). The strike knocked 105 deliveries off Boeing's target for 2008, forcing it to settle for 375. If this year's production goes smoothly, BCA will deliver 480-485 airplanes, about what it aimed for last year. |

The furor over Fiat's proposal to take a 35% interest in Chrysler raises a fundamental question: Is government aid for the auto industry about helping Main Street vs. Wall Street?
If it's about helping Wall Street, the critics have a point: A foreign company would get a share of any theoretical profit Chrysler may someday earn. |

Airbus is facing much more than just contractual and schedule challenges in its A400M military airlifter program - the company may need to do a great deal of re-engineering work to achieve the aircraft's performance targets.
Numerous issues threaten to make the A400M a less attractive and capable aircraft, industry officials say, on top of the well-publicized delays in the flight-test program linked to the lagging engine Fadec development. |
