Why No Blastoff?

Clipped to the Drawing Board by David Singh
The word drifting from Detroit is that General Motors' Saturn division is on the line: Show some signs of success or be set aside to die.

This does not mean an announcement that General Motors (nyse: GM - news - people ) is killing the Saturn brand. GM's present managers have had more experience wrecking car brands than building them, and they learned an expensive and painful lesson when they discontinued Oldsmobile. No, the new strategy is to starve a car line of new product until the business just disappears.

An entertaining little road racer

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Pat Sheen
I come from a long line of Europeans - illiterate, mud-eating Europeans from the Outer Hebrides, to be exact, whose idea of a good time was to go down to the firth and watch the plague victims wash out to sea. Even so, I've always had an affinity for the Continent. Between New Orleans and Amsterdam, I prefer Amsterdam. I'll take Rousseau over Jefferson, Beck's over Budweiser, and Formula One over NASCAR.

The unlikely home of high-end bikes

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Ryan
Sitting on a shelf inside the Toronto headquarters of racing bike company Cervelo , looming above nine assiduous engineers watching the Giro d'Italia race via Internet as they work, is a bicycle frame once used by famous Swedish cyclist Magnus Backstedt and made by storied Italian manufacturer Bianchi.

Why would they place a competitor's bike on a pedestal? Because it's not a Bianchi at all. It's a Cervelo, camouflaged in Bianchi colours, branded with the Bianchi name.

Backstedt was riding for an Italian pro-cycling team sponsored by Bianchi. But he couldn't find a bike that felt right for him, except in Cervelo, recounts Chris Leiphart, Cervelo's head of aerodynamics. Since Backstedt couldn't be seen riding a Cervelo, they got creative, and came up with bicycle cross-dressing.

Airbus chief apologises for yet another delay in A380-programme

Clipped to the Drawing Board by jackson Browne
Airbus president and CEO Paul Enders has apologised for the inconvenience to the company's customers caused by the latest delay in deliveries of the A380 Superjumbo.

He stated that, in a review of the A380 programme the company had ascertained that, although a lot of progress had been made over the last 18 months, "we cannot avoid further incremental delay in [production] ramp-up in 2008/9".

Airbus now plans to deliver 12 A380s this year, instead of 13. Deliveries in 2009, will number 21 instead of 25. Details about production ramp-up and deliveries in 2010, and subsequent years, will be discussed with customers in the coming weeks.

Nissan says future's bright and electric

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Pat Sheen
ON Tuesday, at Nissan’s headquarters in Tokyo , Carlos Ghosn will present the next five-year plan for the carmaker that is vying to be Japan’s second largest. Ghosn will say he has looked into the future — and it is electric.

In a business under growing environmental pressure and beset by the ever-rising cost of oil, Nissan regards its commitment to the commercialisation of electric cars as the most important development in the industry.

It sees potential for boosting sales of conventional cars in Russia, China, India and South America, but regards the car markets in Europe and Japan as essentially static and predicts further weakening of sales in North America. Hence the emphasis on electric.

Keating: the next British supercar brand makes a double debut

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Adam Crighton
With British performance car brands being sold to overseas interests left, right and centre, it seems it's up to enthusiasts to create the next truly British supercar. And after an 8-year development process, here it is: the Keating SKR and its racetrack-only TKR brother offer continental good looks, lightweight snappy handling and stonking power, from 400hp on the base model to a ridiculous projected 1500hp for the twin-turbo top dog. With sensible service intervals and a bespoke approach to supercar-building, Keating hopes to rekindle the British performance auto industry. Tally ho!

New Start-Ups Race to Build Green Car

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Rose Shah
Tesla.  Fisker.  Th!nk.  Loremo .  Mindset.  Not the nameplates you expect to see when you go car shopping?  Give it a few years, and these names may well be above Chevy and Toyota on your list.
The Wall Street Journal explains, "Spurred by the belief that the market for fuel-efficient vehicles is about to take off, a slew of tiny car companies is springing up in Europe and the U.S."  The companies "are racing to produce the next 'green' car, betting that soaring demand will allow them to survive alongside the giants of Detroit, Stuttgart and Tokyo."  Most are less than a year old, "and have financial backing from venture-capital firms," and engineers and designers who cut their teeth creating new cars for "the likes of Germany's Volkswagen AG and storied U.K. racecar builder McLaren."

Cars.com Hybrid Mileage Challenge: Part 1&2

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Pat Sheen

 Part 1

It’s official: At $4.20 a gallon in some areas , gas costs more than a cup of the fancy stuff at Starbucks. That's why Cars.com has revisited its ongoing look at the real-world gas mileage today’s cars are getting. In our last mileage challenge, we took an SUV, a minivan and two sedans on a highway trip around Illinois and Wisconsin, and we concluded that the cars’ EPA highway ratings were easy to achieve. This time around, we wrangled four hybrids — two SUVs, one sedan and one hatchback — and their renowned ability to return extraordinary city mileage numbers to see if they could handle everything Chicago could throw at them.

 Part 2

Yesterday, we introduced the four fuel-sippers — a Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid, Ford Escape Hybrid, Honda Civic Hybrid and Toyota Prius — we schlepped through Chicago traffic early this month . We took pains to drive as we normally would: No nursing the gas pedal to stay in electric mode or purposely coasting to regenerate more braking energy. Just ordinary stop-and-go driving. Faced with some wonky fill-up numbers at a gas pump on the fritz, we took our results from each vehicle’s onboard mileage readout, which we reset at the beginning of each new leg. Read below for the numbers, along with some postgame analysis.

Yet another global achievement by SriLankan Airlines’ aircraft engineering wing

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Rose Shah
SriLankan Airlines has become one of the few organisations in the world to have carried out an important mandatory modification for engines on the Airbus A340, one of the world’s most widely used aircraft.

SriLankan Engineering , the aircraft engineering arm of SriLankan Airlines, is now carrying out modifications on the CFM-56 engines of SriLankan’s own fleet of A340’s in its aircraft engineering facilities at Bandaranaike International Airport.

A M Ariyasena, Base Maintenance Manager, said: “SriLankan Airlines is one of only seven aircraft maintenance organisations in the world to have performed this modification, which is a considerable achievement that our national carrier and our country can be proud of. The other institutions are in Europe, Canada and Hong Kong. We are also achieving a significant cost saving for the airline, and conserving foreign exchange by carrying out the work in Sri Lanka.”

Out of thin air Engineers float 178-year-old idea for the latest in hybrid technology

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Rose Shah
A technology blossoms when the timing is right.
The first patent for a gasoline/electric car was sought in 1905 by U.S. engineer H. Piper. The electric motor augmented the gas engine's meager acceleration. But gas engines became powerful enough on their own so it took until 1999, amid rising gasoline prices, for hybrid Honda Insight appear.

Avalanche Engineering - The Assassin

Clipped to the Drawing Board by John William
You only need to look at some of the latest design concepts being paraded about to know that the proliferation of rockcrawling competitions and the exotic creations they've spawned are already having a profound impact on the off-road world. Tube frames, huge tires, and boat-tailed rear ends are design elements that have already found their way out of the rocks and onto the designer's drawing board. As the extreme competitions gain more exposure to a wider enthusiast market, those design influences are likely to become even more pronounced.

GM CEO says 2010 Volt launch on schedule

Clipped to the Drawing Board by jackson Browne
SAN FRANCISCO - General Motors Corp Chief Executive Rick Wagoner said Thursday the No. 1 U.S. automaker had not hit any obstacles yet that would force it to delay the planned 2010 launch of its plug-in hybrid, the Chevrolet Volt.

"So far we're on schedule," said Wagoner, who was speaking to reporters after a speech to a San Francisco-based public affairs organization.

Wagoner, who had earlier suggested GM's target of launching the electric vehicle could slip, said key work on battery development for the new car was progressing well.

"Our optimism is building," he said.
