Boeing to Rein in Dreamliner Outsourcing

Boeing (BA) , beset by repeated snarls that have delayed commercial deliveries of its 787 Dreamliner into early 2010, is rethinking the global outsourcing model that critics say has caused much of the nearly two-year holdup. The company is making plans to bring more work back in-house.

Honda's clean cut rebel makes debut at New York motorcycle show

Before its worldwide debut in New York , bloggers and some of the motorcycle media were questioning Honda's move into the chopper segment with its new Fury model.

But after its appearance at the Cycle World International Motorcycle Show at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City, the internet had nothing but good things to write about the latest addition to the Honda line-up which should be hitting showrooms by March or April.

Coming with the tag line of “It’s the chopper you would build for yourself--if you had a factory instead of a garage,” Honda promises a street bike with the quality and comfort riders associate with the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer.

1963 Plymouth Fury - Finding His Comfort Zone

While most of us build the kind of car we've yearned for since childhood, it doesn't come that easy for some. In the case of Bill Matthies, it took several years and many projects before he realized his true passion, '62-'65 B-Bodies. "I wanted something I didn't see myself growing out of," he recalls. Four years ago, after searching high and low, he came across this '63 Plymouth Fury with a Sport Fury interior on the internet. The two-year rotisserie restoration began shortly after the purchase, ending with this brilliant Viper Red Fury motivated by a 557ci Hemi.

Airbus A350 reportedly nearing design finalization

The Airbus A350 XWB was recently subjected to a far-reaching internal review, which the aircraft maker calls Milestone 5. It reportedly amounts to a detailed definition freeze for the A350, includes a test of carbon fiber composite panels for use on the fuselage, and shifts the engineering focus to parts design and the start of component production.

Spanish sports car rivals the Bugatti Veyron

It might look like a retro-styled kit car, but the IFR Aspid is probably one of the most futuristic machines on the road. It is also one of the fastest. The figures are scarcely believable: 0-62mph takes 2.8sec and hitting 100mph takes just 5.9sec.

Those sorts of numbers put it on a par with the Bugatti Veyron, but unlike that car, which costs about £1m, the Aspid, when it first appeared, was expected to cost a more modest £90,000. But perhaps the most surprising thing about the Aspid is its country of origin: Spain. In fact, with the exception of Fernando Alonso, the former Formula One world champion, it is probably the fastest thing to ever come out of the country.

Bangalore students design hydrogen-powered car

A vehicle that travels 500 km on a litre of fuel , with water as an important component. That's the prototype of `Project
Garuda RVCE Supermileage' by students of R V College of Engineering in their bid to build an energy-efficient, eco-friendly vehicle.
The project tackles the twin crises of exhaustion of renewable energy
resources and global warming. "Our first prototype released in August last year delivered a mileage of 180 kilometre per litre. The new vehicle is being touted as the most fuel-efficient vehicle in India," observes Aashay Sahay, Project Garuda team member.

Smaller than a Mini but seats four and goes like a bomb: Is the T25 the car of the future?

It's smaller than a Mini but the British inventor says it seats four in style, goes like a bomb and does 80mpg. Pure hype - or a glimpse of the future?

Your car - handsome and fast though it may be - is a dinosaur. Under those sleek lines - and the veneer of electronic, sat-navved and airbagged sophistication - it is bloated, heavy and hungry.

Korean bullet trains set to run

Starting this year, Koreans will be able to travel across the country on a high-speed train made with independent Korean technology.

With the tentatively named KTX-II train, Korea will be the fourth country in the world - after Japan, France and Germany - to have the technology to manufacture a high-speed train which runs at 300 kilometers (186 miles) per hour or faster.

Modern classics

More people are turning to the classics - and we're not talking about literature.

We're talking four wheels and a chassis, covered in sleek metal that harks back to an earlier day when cars had a stronger sense of individuality beyond the cookie-cutter sedans of today.

For a small bit growing breed of independent-minded car enthusiasts enamoured of classic cars, buying an original isn't a practical choice. Hard-core purists may insist on lovingly restoring their hand-sourced acquisitions to their original glory bit in Singapore, where the mantra "new is good" applies to all purchases, a car that is new but looks classic is one niche that several boutique car makers are looking to fill.

German engineering, Italian style

No one ever accused the Volkswagen Beetle of being beautiful. Cute perhaps, or chic in a reverse snobbery kind of way, but not beautiful. It was a utilitarian little sedan with a shape dictated by aerodynamics and practicality, not esthetics.
Through the 1950s and 1960s, automotive enthusiast magazines often carried renderings of restyled Beetles with larger trunks, bigger windows, flowing integrated fenders and more contemporary shapes.

US FAA Gives Brazil's Phenom 100 Jet by Embraer Its Seal of Approval

Brazilian-made Embraer's Phenom 100 entry level executive jet was certified this Monday, December 15, by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). All design goals were met or even surpassed, according to an Embraer press release. First deliveries begin next week.

"We are thrilled to announce that the Phenom 100 is certified by the FAA, as planned, confirming all of the exceptional performance characteristics previously approved by ANAC," said Luis Carlos Affonso, Embraer Executive Vice President for Executive Jets.

"U.S. certification validates the jet's design and its suitability for one of the most important business aviation markets."

The FAA granted U.S. Type Certificate based upon Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency's (Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil - ANAC) Type Certificate issued on December 9. EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) certification is expected for the second quarter of 2009.

Chinese firm drives up the ante in car market

With the Detroit Big Three automakers teetering and China’s once go-go car market in reverse, this might seem a bad time for a relative unknown to be launching a new vehicle. Then again, BYD Co. isn’t rolling out any ordinary car.

On Monday, the upstart company best known for making cell-phone batteries will begin selling its F3DM — China’s first mass-produced hybrid electric vehicle . The car is expected to retail for around US$20,000 in China, and make its way to the U.S. in 2011.

“For a long time, China’s auto technology was undeveloped,” BYD founder and President Wang Chuanfu, 42, said in an interview Friday at its hexagon-shaped headquarters here. “But our (electric car) technology marks the first time we’re standing as a leader on the world stage.”

The Soul of a New Mercedes

Car buyers  everywhere are spurning gas guzzlers, and some carmakers feel the pain more than others. Take Mercedes-Benz, long known for its luxury cars—its flagship S-Class is a full-size sedan that starts at around US $90 000. Without sacrificing performance or comfort, the company must meet the expectations of its increasingly environmentally conscious customers.

Mercedes, a division of Daimler, has ingeniously applied technology to come up with a stunning solution. It’s the F700 research car, which debuted last year. The F700 was created to give customers a preview of what they might

expect from an S-Class sedan 10 years from now. The interior is hugely spacious, modern, and filled with electronics; the exterior is shiny and sleek, a dramatic evolution from Mercedes’s current upright look. The car is also fast: it goes from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 7.5 seconds.

New BMW Z4 revealed

BMW’s new Z4 , set for debut at Detroit next month, has been web released, showcasing a much smoother, less controversial aesthetic.

One of Chris Bangle’s most controversial creations, the Z4 has strongly polarised aesthetic opinions.

With BMW styling now under the guiding influence of Dutchman Adrian van Hooydonk, the latest Z4 cues styling details more akin to pleasing a generic, customer-driven aesthetic, instead of pandering to dashing design parameters.

Italy’s legendary car designers face hard times

MANY men dream of owning a flame-red Italian sports car : a Ferrari, a Maserati or an open-topped Alfa Romeo, like those that appear in the films of the 1960s. These cars owe their elegant lines to the teams of designers at Pininfarina, Bertone and Italdesign, the styling houses based in Turin, in north-west Italy. But as the demand for fancy cars collapses, the car stylists are in difficulty.
