It's an age old question , but one I never grow tired of considering: Just what is the ugliest car ever built. I'm not talking about a one-off, homebuilt special that some crackpot put together in his backyard. I'm interested in the ones that were (supposedly) the work of an OEM or independent design team, and then approved by an (allegedly) intellegent bunch of product people and execs. |

In point of fact , and notwithstanding the pleas and protests of your calendar, 2010 is here. This, because industry has deemed the calendar year outmoded for its purposes. Rather, the weather is what matters. Bikes are bought in the late Winter and Spring. They have to be in showrooms in January, or the month before, or two months before. |

On the Pacific Rim , experts predict that over 11 million cars will be sold in China in 2009, eclipsing sales of all brands in the United States and, over the next 20 years, China is expected to lead the world in motor vehicle sales. Glimpses of the statistics underscore those predictions; over 85% of the adult population of China does not own a car, and with a population exceeding 1.3 billion, the potential market is massive. |

The only thing more aggressive than the styling of Henrik Fisker’s super-luxe plug-in hybrid is the goal he’s set for the company building it. Fisker doesn’t plan to be a niche player in the emerging market for cars with cords, nor does he see Fisker Automotive building toys for the rich. He considers the Karma sedan the flagship of a company that will, within five years, rival Porsche in both the quality and quantity of its automobiles. |

The truly wretched East German Trabant looks set to make a comeback at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show. But, unlike the fume-belching 1950s-era model, the updated Trabant will run on electricity and sunshine. Set to be called the Trabant nT, the redesign is the idea of German die-cast toy manufacturer Herpa Miniaturmodelle, which has produced a prototype of the car to help generate enough interest and investment for a production launch in 2012. |

Considering America's well-known love affair with custom motorcycles , you might think that the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building would be dominated by U.S.-based builders. We keep saying that one of the ways all cars will get greener and more efficient is for their engines to get smaller and work harder. One of the first production examples of this is Ford's EcoBoost V6 engine , which delivers the power of a V8 with better gas mileage. |

Shipbuilder Austal first came to Gizmag’s attention in 2005 with the launch of the world’s largest aluminum vessel, the 127 meter Benchijigua Express. The company then started building Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) for the US Navy, based on the same trimaran design. And, now, Austal is launching an even more refined version that improves sea-keeping, passenger comfort and fuel efficiency. This week, Tony Armstrong, Austal’s head of R&D, spoke exclusively to Gizmag about potentially building 20% of the US Navy fleet, how they reduced fuel consumption by a quarter, what sick bags can tell you, and much more. |

When Ford started sending its two-door Anglia and four-door Prefect "captive imports" to North America in the late 1940s, they were basic cars. Engineering from the 1930s featuring tiny, long-stroke, side-valve four-cylinder engines, mechanical brakes and solid front axles on transverse leaf springs was marginal for our driving conditions. |

The name remains the same but in Ultegra 6700 Shimano have carried out the biggest and most dramatic overhaul of the groupset since the introduction of 10-speed in 2005.
As Shimano tradition seemingly dictates, the second tier road groupset from the Japanese component manufacturers has adopted many of the changes made to the top-end Dura-Ace group during last year's revamp.
The most immediate and obvious change to Ultegra is its appearance. Carbon brake levers, hidden cables and the bolt-free face of the hollow outer chainring are the biggest changes. Each refinement contributes to an altogether cleaner appearance. |

When General Motors Corp.'s top executives were choosing this year which brands to keep and which to ditch, Cadillac was unquestionably deemed to be a valuable asset that should be part of a new GM.
