Web sites promote "hypermiling" to save on fuel

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Administrator
Did you know Trivia - As U.S. gasoline prices hit records on almost a daily basis, an increasing number of motorists are following a radical driving technique designed to eke out every last mile from a tank of fuel.
Known as 'hypermiling,' the method can double gas mileage, even in gas-guzzling vehicles that would normally get less than 20 mpg.

Promoted on a growing number of Web sites, hypermiling includes pumping up tires to the maximum rating on their sidewalls, which may be higher than levels recommended in car manuals; using engine oil of a low viscosity, and the controversial practice of drafting behind other vehicles on the highway to reduce aerodynamic drag -- a practice begun a few years ago by truck drivers.

Price rises drive down Indian share in China's iron ore market

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Administrator
Did you know Trivia - BEIJING - Indian iron ore miners are risking losing their Chinese market because of sharp price rises, said Luo Bingsheng, deputy director of the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA).

Iron ore imports from India in 2007 rose 6.14 percent, or 4.59 million tonnes, to 79.37 million tonnes compared with the previous year, but the increase was 11.26 percentage points lower than the total import growth of 17.4 percent, or 56.79 million tonnes, Luo said at the China-India Iron Ore Summit on Monday.

China's iron and steel industry has taken action to import more iron ore from countries other than India. Imports from India rose 3.4 percent this February, much lower than the 10 percent and 8.3 percent growth of iron ore import from Brazil and Australia, respectively, CISA statistics show..

General Motors posts $3.3 billion loss

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Administrator
Did you know Trivia - DETROIT: General Motors said Wednesday that it lost $3.3 billion, or $5.74 a share, in the first quarter, as losses from vehicle sales in North America grew and the United States housing slump hurt its financing arm.
The loss included a $1.45 billion write-down in the value of GM's interest in the finance arm, General Motors Acceptance Corp.
The overall first-quarter loss compares with a loss of $42 million, or 7 cents a share, in the first quarter a year ago.
The results are likely to raise questions about the viability of GM's turnaround, particularly after its cross-town rival, Ford Motor, reported a profit last week. GM began its restructuring effort about a year ahead of Ford's.
Excluding special items like the charge related to GMAC and payments to help its former parts division, Delphi Corp., emerge from bankruptcy, GM said it lost $350 million, or 62 cents a share, down from $10 million, or 1 cent a share, in the period last year.

Did you know Trivia - Smart ideas for tough times: The 50 companies that make up our annual ranking nurture cultures that value creative people in good times and bad
Suddenly, innovation has a bull's-eye on its back. As the recession debate shifts from "what if" to "how long," slashing research and development budgets just got a lot more tempting. That high-risk product in your pipeline? It's about to get much more scrutiny. And the "chief innovation officer" your CEO brought in last year to show his commitment to creativity? He'd better start proving his worth. Outside consultants are starting to pick up on the effects of such belt-tightening. "I'm seeing it in my business," says Jeneanne Rae, president of Alexandria (Va.)-based consulting firm Peer Insight. "There's this sense of which shoe's going to drop next."

Fuel cells group links up with AVL on hybrids

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Administrator
Did you know Trivia - Automotive technology and testing group MIRA has unveiled a "plugless plug-in hybrid" vehicle that it claims is a first. The H4V Hybrid 4-wheel-drive Vehicle is intended as a concept evaluation and is not intended for public sale.
The innovation that MIRA is claiming for the H4V is a battery pack that is arranged in three portable "cassettes" that can be removed singly or together from the vehicle. This means that they can be recharged outside the vehicle, so it isn't necessary to drive the car into a garage where a mains supply of electricity might be available.

Danish Engineers Create Devices for Handling Objects Invisible to the Naked Eye

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Administrator
Did you know Trivia - The most daunting challenge of automating assembly of very small products, such as hearing aids, is how to feed and manipulate tiny screws and other parts. These parts are so small that gravity becomes less dominant than other forces, such as van der Waals forces, surface tension and electrostatic energy. These forces cause tiny parts to stick to the gripper, creating problems with centering and alignment.

3D image sensors: what are they

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Administrator

Did you know Trivia - When I first saw the announcement of 3D image sensor chips cross the newswire, I must admit my first reaction was a bit dismissive.

Mistakenly, I assumed this was some kind of gimmick that paired two conventional image sensors a few inches apart to create stereoscopic images, something that has been readily doable with two separate, independent image sensors for years. "A more convenient package," I thought to myself. I couldn't have been more wrong.
