Did you know Trivia - Recent building activity in Iraq has taken place amid growing violence. Contractors operate equipment under the crackle of automatic weapon fire and with the protection of M-1 tanks, Stryker vehicles and Apache helicopters. The workers and engineers in this case are constructing a series of walls to block certain areas of Sadr City, the vast Shi'ite slum in Baghdad. Dozens of walls have already been built around Baghdad, the southern city of Basra and other Iraqi cities, creating segregated ethnic Sunni and Shi'ite neighborhoods ringed with checkpoints and command posts. The latest flurry of construction activity has little to do with nation building, but rather is more related to a deteriorating security environment. click this link to read more |

Did you know Trivia - In the 2003 invasion of Iraq, U.S. generals David Petraeus and Ray Odierno could hardly have seemed more different in approach. But they later formed a partnership that helped both land top jobs on Wednesday. The scholarly, wiry Petraeus had his troops working on politics and economics to revive the northern city of Mosul in 2003 while the giant, shaven-headed Odierno conducted tough combat operations around Tikrit, Saddam Hussein's home town. Petraeus won widespread praise for his approach while Odierno faced criticism that his tactics drove local people into the arms of insurgents, although he insisted his sector was very different from Mosul and needed a robust approach. click this link to read more |

Did you know Trivia - Here is my assessment of the current gold share market. The gold price is taking a much needed correction and bullion corrections are almost always severe and volatile and the shares follow. Obviously gold coming down could mean less profits and cash flow for companies and this unnerves some holders to sell. With major investment banks projecting a long term gold price of $700, some portfolio managers that usually invest in GE or IBM are thinking that this may be the start of a major downturn. They are therefore selling. These managers don’t understand that 95% of the mining analysts have never got it right on the metal prices the 35 years I have been investing in the mines. Analysts are conservative and they are cautious. They are usually from a geology or engineering background. What do they know about global economics? And if they are economists – god help us. Lot’s of new money has come into the gold mining sector the past year and this is money that is not philosophically tuned into gold as money and most think the Fed can actually manage the currency and printing money is the normal thing to do. They saw gold going up and the stocks having positive momentum and this made sense for them to buy. When this momentum stopped they were ready to sell. click this link to read more |

Did you know Trivia - We do it with bottles and paper, cardboards and cans. But when it comes to recycling disposable nappies - and used ones at that - there is undoubtedly a whiff of suspicion. Nevertheless, a Canadian firm has unveiled plans for a UK first - a processing plant to do just that. Knowaste - which already recycles hundreds of thousands of nappies in the US - is to open a site in Birmingham later this year click this link to read more |

Did you know Trivia - The NIU Clean Snowmobile Team is doing its part to help the environment.
The team was named the “Rookie of the Year” at the SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge in Houghton, Mich., on March 10-15.
Treasurer Matt Davis said the challenge is for students to modify a snowmobile for better exhaust and noise emissions, while improving its performance characteristics. The long-term goal is to make snowmobiling cleaner for the environment.
For this year’s competition, the team had to convert their current snowmobile to use E85 ethanol.
“Basically, we put a 2007 engine into our old sled and did a lot of mechanical engineering stuff and converted it to E85,” Davis said. click this link to read more |

Did you know Trivia - Research by two scientists from the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology in the U.S., suggests that it is feasible to capture and store CO2 emissions at the point of generation from widely distributed, small energy-producing sources, such as vehicles and diesel generators, which account for about two thirds of global CO2 emissions. The Georgia Tech team’s goal is to create a sustainable transportation system that uses a liquid fuel and traps the carbon emission in the vehicle for later processing at a fueling station. The carbon would then be shuttled back to a processing plant where it could be transformed into liquid fuel. Currently, Georgia Tech researchers are developing a fuel processing device to separate the carbon and store it in the vehicle in liquid form. click this link to read more |

Did you know Trivia - (NAGPUR , India) In what is being viewed as another lapse on the part of RTM Nagpur University, two questions in the Structural Analysis question paper of BE Civil Engineering (Semester IV) are said to be entirely "out of syllabus", while symbols in a third question are confusing for students. The three-hour examination was conducted on Sunday. Adding to the students' woes are professors of one of the engineering colleges in the city, who, the students complain, are not co-operating with them. As a result, while students from all other colleges have made a representation to the university through their professors, the students of this particular college have been left in the limbo. click this link to read more |

Did you know Trivia - The possibility that car drivers could one day wear a special cap to warn when they are showing dangerous lapses in concentration is raised today. Scientists and engineers have found that it is possible to tell if a person is likely to make a mistake up to half a minute before they are even aware they have made it. The discovery suggests that one day employees could monitor the brain of a person doing a monotonous but important task, such as monitoring nuclear plant safety, driving or piloting a plane, to improve safety. click this link to read more |

Did you know Trivia - A local town has been hit by a hurricane and you have been sent there as a disaster relief engineer. How do you respond, given time and budget constraints?
Thirty five civil engineering students of the College of Science and Technology (CST) in Kharbandi were placed in just such a scenario at a day-long “Rapid Response Engineering Challenge” event organized by SNV on April 16. Divided into groups, students were made to play the role of registered engineers in restoring a disaster struck area: “Hurricane Mitch in Honduras”. Each group had to build a pipe work system to carry water to refugees across a stretch of ground in a simulated disaster situation. Students coordinating within their group had to plan and design their ideas on worksheets and maps within a given time period. click this link to read more |
