The Slippery Slope

Unfortunately, it is a sad fact of life that the world is going to suffer from a significant lack of new products, ideas and concepts
Engineers are the major source of innovation and there is a fundamental problem. We now have a significant lack of essential “tools of trade” and are breeding a generation of Engineers without the basic skills or training in certain essential facets of Engineering, in fact these key skills are on the verge of extinction.

Process Improvement - Nearly

 Process Improvement - Nearly

I'm a Contract Mechanical Engineer and often get asked to look at process improvement problems.
A few weeks ago a colleague asked me to help one of his customers.  A small family business manufacturing printed and plain wrapping paper.   They where struggling.
Originally they were distributers of paper products and had quite a good distribution business.  One of their suppliers had gone bankrupt and they had bought one of his flexo printers, some rewinders and ancillary equipment at auction – very cheap.

 An Engineering Article about Nothing

Sometimes I think that this could be the story of my life

It Doesn't Matter How Bad things Get – They can always get worse

It Doesn't Matter How Bad things Get – They can always get worse

and they generally do – plus don't forget Murphy's Law – it's guaranteed to kick you when you're down

So when the going gets tough – stay strong – look adversity in the eye, give fate the finger and believe in that old Latin aphorism "Nil Desperandum Illegitimi Carborundum” , which is loosely translated  to “Never Let The Bastards Grind You Down"

Don't let the tail wag the dog

It generally creeps up on you.  You're being helpful,  trying to go that extra yard,  striving for that little bit extra in order to make the job easier for someone else.  But the more you do,  the more is being requested.  In small bites.  And thats when it hits you –  You're loosing control and “The Tail is Wagging the Dog”

A Second Class Ride is better than a First Class Walk

A Second Class Ride is better than a First Class Walk

This was a favorite saying of my old grandad.  He didn't drive and was pleased to get any sort of ride if it avoided a long walk.

We can apply the same principle to Engineering Decisions.
Sometimes there is a need to be pragmatic.  Whilst we generally strive for the perfect Engineering solution, life is not always perfect and particularly in business.  There are many times when accepting a lesser solution may get a workable result verses holding out for the perfect solution which may not get a result at all
