Germany Moves to Protect Key Industries

Clipped to the Drawing Board by John William

Nice to see a government actually supporting industry

In recent months, the German government has become increasingly anxious about the prospect of foreign state-owned investment funds or hedge funds -- which are popularly known as "locusts" in Germany -- snapping up strategic industries . Now Berlin has prepared measures to protect German firms from being bought by undesirable foreign investors.

some countries are very protective about their key industries and others don't seem to care at all - for example the US gets vey exited if industries like ports and airlines look like going to offshore ownership - which is a bit ironic really, given the US commitment to the free enterprise system and market forces - when it's US interests moving into other countries it's fine - but when the situation is reversed ? I seem to have got away from Germany - just let market forces rule - all that happens is a false , protected market - wait a minute - that does sound like Germany after all
