Entrepreneurs Envision a Sea Change in Commercial Space

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Adam Crighton

Always exiting - and sure not to disapoint this time around the space engineers will be totally focused

Entrepreneurial companies are determined to reshape the commercial space industry in the years ahead with ventures designed to reduce the cost of access to space.

As Space Shuttle Discovery has begun a 14-day mission to the International Space Station (ISS), after a successful launch from the Kennedy Space Center.

This is really cool stuff. I'm imagining the creation of small villages in space. Imagine what it would be like to do a several month stint working in space.

Seriously, that's just silly. Who on earth is going to want to live in cramped living spaces and put up with all of the other inconveniences to do work that could just as easily be done down here. What possible business advantage is there?

And apparently there is only the market for, say, 6 computers in the world. And 640K should be enough for any program to run.

Just because you can't think of a reason, doesn't mean a reason doesn't exist. I'm sure many an entrepreneur will find many a way to make money in space.

Well what if there was a resort floating around in space? I imagine a lot of people would find it cool to go spend a week or two in space. And subsequently there would be jobs at these resorts.

Hell yeah. If it was affordable enough I would def love to go for a holiday in space.

Just think of all the different activities you could do up there that are impossible down here.

It really seems that the more we progress the quicker we progress. And you know that once business decides to get into the game it's going to move a lot quicker too.

Really looking forward to taking my first space trip.

Yes, businesses aren't burdened with a lot of the restrictions that a government may have. They can be a lot more ruthless in their development.
Mary () Newbie | 2007-10-25 03:47:10
And as a result are we going to end up with a 'wild west' style space where businesses are free to do anything without regulation?

Who is going to govern space?
Craig () Newbie | 2007-10-25 03:50:10
To begin with I suppose maybe it will, but that seems to be the natural evolution of most things.

The problem is, with the vastness of space, how are you going to adequately maintain control of it?

Do we really need to control it? Or will it maybe evolve in a self regulating fashion?

This was the stuff of science fiction movies (what seems like) only a few short years ago and now it's pretty close to being "live" there's plenty of activity going on and more importantly, there seems to be plenty of dollars being thrown at this project - will it happen ?- of course it will - the push is too strong - There is a lot of development work and the technology and engineering is here - how will it all be managed ?? Haa Haa - now that, might be the biggest problem of all. Get used to it - it's coming - in fact, get your name down now if you fancy a stint in space
