China's Largest Coal Fired Power Plant

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Yan Chu
The largest Coal fired Power Plant in China has recently gone into production.
Equipped with four 1,000 megawatt generating units this facility is believed to be the worlds largest coal fired power plant engineered with Ultra-Supercritical Technologies .
This final stage of development completes a project which was started in December 2006 when the first two generators started production.  The plant is owned and operated by the China Huaneng Group
Clean Coal power generation remains the elusive target of numerous research projects by countries around the globe.  Whilst not the final step,  Ultra-Supercritical Technology brings incremental process improvement to the systems and when coupled with Carbon Capture Techniques which are also being developed,  the light at the end of the tunnel begins to glow a little brighter

Cleaning up coal is all well and good but it really is just putting a bandaid on the problem rather than fixing it

Agreed, The technology is now there, why aren't they using it?

if there was another way, it would be done - the issue is that coal is cheap, abundant and the engineering "relatively" straightforward. I am amazed to hear that the Chinese are opening a new coal fired power station (something like) 1 every 2 weeks - the scale of activity is enormous - as is the amount of coal needed to run them. There needs to be some sort of control because at the moment they seem to be like a run away express train - with nothing going to stand in their way - but to get back to the article - at least these power stations are using state of the art technology and are a bit cleaner

the articles i have been reading are claiming that the intent is to build these very large power stations using the latest technologies like Ultra Supercritical so that they can have greater capacity and then to close down a lot of small power stations which are very inefficient and using the old "very" dirty technology

good in theory - but in practice the country is so big and fragmented and when you move further away from Beijing, the control from Beijing gets less and less.
What Beijing wants and what Beijing gets can be 2 very different things
