NASA to research on magnetic reconnection

Clipped to the Drawing Board by George Tan
NASA has outlined a mission that will probe known magnetic reconnection sites , which might prove to be an important source of energy regeneration in the universe.

Magnetic fields are continuously being generated and annihilated throughout the universe. The generation takes place by the motions of conductive fluids in the interiors of planets, the Sun and stars. Simultaneously, annihilation takes place, often violently, in these and other regions including solar and stellar atmospheres, the boundaries between solar and stellar winds, planetary magnetospheres around strong magnetic stars such as pulsars, and in exploding supernovas.

so, if i read this right - when,,,and if....we work out whats happening with magnetic reconnection in space, the aim is to use this energy source to power future space exploration space ships - sounds like a cunning plan to me -

i was reading up on the Mars project and seem to remember that nuclear power was being considered - i guess thats a "here and now" solution to power for a long space journey - something like this is a much longer term proposition - but the chance to access unlimited energy must have the space boffins drooling

this links to an article which goes back a few years - but the principle holds true - it gives a good perspective

another site which is worth a look - quite a nice effect with the picture - and it brings a bit of controversy into the debate - always a good thing

good concept - and technology is "basically" known - some development needed in certain areas - but yes - a good looking future source of energy for space travel- not a quick answer but can be developed - exciting project for those involved
