Revolutionary European Icebreaker Ship and Floating Laboratory

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Sean

Designs are well underway for a first of a kind revolutionary ice breaking ship which will also double as a state of the art floating research laboratory.  This is an exciting engineering and scientific project which leads to many questions about how the logistics of this type of collaborative European venture can be made to work
The ship which has been named the Aurora Boralis is due for assembly work to start in 2012

Russia has a strong reputation in shipbuilding for arduous conditions and has announced that it will be a partner in launching this state-of-the-art research vessel. Other European nations are expected to join the project soon.

this has probably got nothing at all to do with ice breakers - but it does show how trecherous ice can be

i think that all the talk about logistical difficulties is a bit of a "wind up" after all, the Europeans are jointly building aircraft and doing all sorts of other joint ventures - more likely it's new ground (or ice) for the individuals who are involved - something they wouldn't normally get involved in - I bet it will be an easy fix

what a fascinating project - this is the future - a lot of science involved in understanding the mechanics of ice and how it forms in a sea - and more importantly how it can be broken to allow a ship to travel through - with plenty of scope for research projects - a real "love in" by the Europeans on this one -

I read the comments from these "Europeans" and it's easy to see why this United States of Europe" idea will never work - there will be more time effort and money wasted over the minor issues than ever gets spent on research - It wouldn't suprise me if it never took off - because it got bogged down in all the side issues or spent all of the money on meetings - always good at forming committes and having meetings to discuss the next meetings

let me quote from the attached article -
"It took less time for Christopher Columbus to drum up the money and set sail for the New World than it has for the Columbus space lab to get off the ground." and that about says it all - I agree with Ash - nice people, interesting food but they can't work together - they've had centuries of fighting each other - I don't know, .... it might get legs ...eventually, but this "European" concept - hard to see it ever being successful

one thing u forget - Russian involvement-
the bear will make it go - forget the european thing - they useless -
Good Russian engineers and scientists + much oil money - it will go

True true, where there's money, potentially large amounts of it, there's a way.
