Business as Usual for Indian IT Outsource Company Satyam

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Rose Shah

Despite the recent world business woes and the potential for futher economic downside,  the fourth ranked Indian software services exporter Satyam Computer Services Ltd is seeing no downturn in activity.
On the contrary,  there is strong evidence to suggest that companies will be putting more effort into cutting costs by further outsourcing as they strive to maintain the bottom line.
The strong rupee verses the weak dollar adds to an interesting combination, but sources within the company are confident that they can manage this situation.
Investors have been a bit nervous,  but Satyam where able to beat market forecasts in the September quarter with a 28% lift in profit.

An example of trends in IT outsourcing is  the recent multi year deal Satyam signed with Fujitsu Services
Although an Indian company,  Satyam has expanded into the Chinese market as it seeks to grow

all i can say is that i'm glad i'm not in IT - tho' having said that, as a mechanical engineer, i'm constantly looking over my shoulder cause i know my company is continually looking for ways to cut costs - hard to see how they could outsource my work - but i guess that many things are possible
Shaz () Newbie | 2007-12-05 17:03:49
don't get too complacent Zac - like you said, many things are possible - I've got a couple of friends in IT who thought the same about a year ago - now they're not in IT and the jobs are OS - when costs need to be squeezed - theres no such thing as loyalty

the problem is that they're so bloody good at it and so bloody cheap - very hard to compete - I can certainly see how senior managers make these decisions based purely on costs - it will come back to BITE - but by that time the managers who made the first call will be long gone and it'll be up to some other poor sucker to try and fix

Many believe this to be just a temporary thing. As India gets more and more business, and subsequent money flowing into the country, their standards of living and costs of things are going up. Soon they won't be as cheap a country to get work out of. Then they predict Russia will become the next outsourcing hub of the world but I think you're right, by then a lot of companies may have realised that the long term gains aren't as lucrative as the short term ones so it may not be worth it.

I disagree, I think outsourcing is just in a growth stage. People will work out how to better manage and control outsourcing and Overseas will work out how to better work with our companies with more experience. As it matures I think you will see it expand into many other areas too.

the world is a global village - get used to it - the Indians work hard and good - if you want to compete - do it better - don't sit on your fat rear ends and complain. -
Sarah () Newbie | 2007-12-06 01:20:34
Yes their culture does encourage hard working but I don't think it produces a good environment for innovation. The culture in the West is better suited to that IMHO and as a result we will always be ahead.
Riaz () Newbie | 2007-12-05 20:02:51
good points Rak - it's easier to complain - the Indians work harder and smarter and play better cricket and you can't get a decent curry outside of the subcontinent -
Rak () Newbie | 2007-12-05 20:04:20
yes it is difficult to get a good curry when travelling out of the India - but I guess that we all have our cross to bear
Sarah () Newbie | 2007-12-06 01:22:28
Maybe you're just not looking hard enough. You need to find the little out of the way places. The ones where you see lot's of Indians and Sri Lankan's eating. You can find good Indian outside India with a bit of effort.
Shaz () Newbie | 2007-12-05 20:46:56
yeah, all good points - now lets look at the facts like - insurance costs, health care costs, roads, bridges, civil infrastructure, a caste system which delivers cheap peasant labour for the menial jobs, govenment which governs at all levels, public schooling, public amenities etc etc etc - and you want to talk about a level playing field and equal competition - bulldust
