The unlikely home of high-end bikes

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Ryan
Sitting on a shelf inside the Toronto headquarters of racing bike company Cervelo , looming above nine assiduous engineers watching the Giro d'Italia race via Internet as they work, is a bicycle frame once used by famous Swedish cyclist Magnus Backstedt and made by storied Italian manufacturer Bianchi.

Why would they place a competitor's bike on a pedestal? Because it's not a Bianchi at all. It's a Cervelo, camouflaged in Bianchi colours, branded with the Bianchi name.

Backstedt was riding for an Italian pro-cycling team sponsored by Bianchi. But he couldn't find a bike that felt right for him, except in Cervelo, recounts Chris Leiphart, Cervelo's head of aerodynamics. Since Backstedt couldn't be seen riding a Cervelo, they got creative, and came up with bicycle cross-dressing.
