As automakers adjust to America's third oil shock , I hope they haven't forgotten one of the main lessons of the earlier tremors: Too much fuel economy might be almost as damaging as too little.

You build a new house after the earthquake, and an aftershock wrecks it. That's the scenario auto executives must keep in mind now as they watch customers abandon larger cars and trucks.
