I was born January 19th 1943 in Port Arthur , Texas 
As a teenager I befriended a group of outcasts who introduced me to African American blues artists such as Bessie Smith and Leadbelly
I attended Thomas Jefferson High School where I had a difficult time
I graduated in 1960 and went to Lamar State College of Technology in Beaumont, Texas and later the University of Texas,  although I did not graduate
I cultivated a wild and rebellious reputation and recorded my very first song on tape " What Good Can Drinking Do" at the home of a fellow student in December 1962
I left Texas for San Francisco in 1963
I joined with future Jefferson Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and Margareta Kaukonen who played the typewriter as a percussion instrument in a recording session which included tracks such as "Typewriter Talk" and "Kansas City Blues"
I drank Southern Comfort and was a heavy user of drugs
In 1966 I joined the psychedelic rock band "Big Brother and the Holding Company"
Our debut album was released in August 1967, just after we appeared at the Monterey Pop Festival
In 1968 we toured the East Coast and on the last day of the tour played with Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Joni Mitchell, Richie Havens, Paul Butterfield and Elvin Bishop at the "Wake for Martin Luther King Jr" concert in New York
Time magazine called me"probably the most powerful singer to emerge from the white rock movement"
The 1979 film "The Rose" was loosely based on my life
I died in 1970 from an overdose, a combination of heroin and alcohol
