Who am I ?
I was born Feb 26th, 1932 in Kingsland, Arkansas, USA
I discovered later in life that I was of Scottish royal descent
At age 5, I was working in the cotton fields with the rest of my family
My early influences were gospel music
I began playing the guitar as a young boy and when in high school I sang on a local radio station
I was also influenced by traditional Irish music
I enlisted in the United States Air Force and was discharged as a sergeant in 1954
In 1954 I moved to Memphis, Tennessee and sold appliances whilst studying to become a radio announcer and at night I played with Luther Perkins and Marshall Grant
I was unsuccessful with my first audition for Sun Records in 1954
I eventually won a recording contract with Sun and had success in the country charts with "Hey Porter" and "Cry Cry Cry" in 1955
In 1957 I became the first Sun artist to release a long playing album
I carefully stage managed an "Outlaw" image although never served a prison sentence
In the early 60's I started drinking heavily and was addicted to amphetamines and barbiturates
In the early 70's I was known as "The Man In Black"
My early singles included "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I walk the Line"
