Japan fudges road construction justification

It has been claimed that false and misleading information was used to justify some of Japans most spectacular road building projects.
Kuniichiro Takahashi, the former president of the state highways agency has claimed that the hugely indebted Government has rediscovered its addiction to public civil engineering works and has earmarked nearly 70 trillion yen (£311 billion) in its budget for road and rail building projects over the next decade.
Ridiculing these new “roads to nowhere”, Mr Takahashi said they were almost certainly unnecessary in a country whose population is ageing, shrinking and buying fewer cars every year. However, major road and rail construction continues to be the favourite tool of pork-barrel politics in Japan.

it might be a bit of pork barrel politics but the end result is good infrastructure and thats what countries need - its ok having industries - but you have got to move people and goods around and thats where the infrastructure is vital - so whilst these comments might look "sensational" I'd be looking a bit deeper and good for the construction industry

I know this isn't the reason it's being done but all this infrastructure could pay off in the long run. They may have an aging population now but some of these projects are going to take a fair while and who knows that the situation will be like then. It may be that these dud roads end up opening opportunities for new business and manufacturing centers in new regions that were previously not possible.

i don't have any problems with building infrastructure - there should be more of it - about time some of the western countries got off their fat asses and put some guts into building infrastructure - its a long term thing - good for industry and good for people
