Crash proof computer controlled cars

For years, automobile manufacturers have been attempting to develop an automatic crash avoidance system which would become a standard feature in much the same way that anti-lock brakes are a standard feature on many cars

A team of British engineers working with DaimlerChrysler believe that they have solved this problem by creating a computer controlled car which will react faster and more predictably to dangerous situations than the average driver
Whilst in the US, engineers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology have developed and tested a laser-based ranging system to assess the performance of automobile collision warning systems.

this seems like a vey strange concept - having a computer take over the car -

as far as I can tell, the British system is a computer take over - much like anti lock brakes and the American research is to develop a warning system - are these complementary - could both operate together ? if its like everything else - they will be different systems that don't talk to each other -

well anti lock brakes where a strange concept originally - but pretty much accepted as a critical safety feature now - whatever they come up with - I'm sure we'll get used to

if it saves lives - the cost isn't critical - but once they get into mass production - the costs will come down - they'll be made in China anyway and be dirt cheap

hmm thinking that soon everythng will be on laser guided tracks or something similar to that auto distance for front and back which in theory would be the safest.

i just had a vision of a compuer controlled car - operating on speech recognition - refusing to drive the guy coming out of the pub because his speech was so slurred that the computer could'n recognise it - ha, ha, ha
