Carbon Dioxide to fuel process being developed

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Susan Decker
Researchers from Sandia National Laboratories are currently working on a process to chemically transform carbon dioxide into carbon-neutral liquid fuels .
A prototype device is being engineered which will chemically re energize carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide and ultimately this could become the building block to synthesize a liquid combustible fuel.
For example, coal could be burned at a clean coal power plant. The carbon dioxide from the burning of the coal could then be captured and reduced to carbon monoxide. The carbon monoxide could then be the starting point of making gasoline, jet fuel, methanol, or almost any type of liquid fuel. There are many more bridges to be crossed before this process could be applied to a commercial operation however the first step is to demonstrate the practicality of the concept and to then determine how test results from small-scale testing can be expanded to work in real devices,

more than one way to skin a cat - this process could be the way to change the way we are looking at the future

i agree - it spins it out a few more years - we need quantum leaps of change we need to do it different - we need to be self sustaining

i don't think that it will be possible to wave a magic wand and change decades of "bad for the environment" practise overnight - nice thought but it won't happen - there needs to be incremental change and this could be an integral part

fascinating process and concept - leave it to the chemical engineers to get the world out of trouble
JohnCee () Newbie | 2008-01-07 19:48:13
my history isn't that good - but isn't it the chemical engineers who got us into this mess in the fist place !

we provide "the means" - what you and the rest of the world do with it, is up to you
