Kenya-the next big outsource centre?

AS the world becomes increasingly a global village,  the race is on for the next cost effective outsourcing hub.
The phone bank could be anywhere in the world - but its Kenya
"People say to me, 'Wow, this is happening in Kenya? We only think of you for athletics and wildlife,'" says Gilda Odera, managing director of Skyweb-Evans in the heart of the capital, Nairobi. "But people are getting really interested in us."
The six clocks on the wall track time zones from the US Pacific seaboard, through the Midwest and across the Atlantic to Britain. Twenty or so computers sit idle, headsets resting on mouse pads waiting for the next shift of call center workers.

whats with the desire to have a call center industry ? wheres the value adding - if i understand correctly - they do market research or act as receivers of complaints or inquiries don't do it very well and pass on the information to somebody else - ???

for some reason companies in first world countries think that saving a few bucks on labor costs is a benefit to the company -when all it does is irritate the hell out of the consumer who hates the experience - doesn't make sense to me

you can take all of these overseas call centers and shove em where the sun don't shine - absolutely hopeless - i've nothing against the people on the phones - but when i ring up - i want to talk to someone who understands me and i can understand them and i can get answers

my company uses an IT support in the Philippines - the service is lousy - the group is run by first world people but tech queries go to the Philippines and it is terribly slow and difficult to get things fixed - then they send around "satisfaction surveys" ha, ha, ha the questions are framed so that you can't tell then what you really think - i get extremely frustrated - but there is no way to feed back the problems - no one wants to listen

you gotta understand that these places have a group of smart, well educated, professional types - a result of the British influence and the British educational system - but with nothing to use the education on - the service industries and tech industries just arnt there - so whilst being a call center might not rate for a lot of first world "educated" types - for these guys it's like manna from heaven - they'll do it with open arms and we should give them a chance

read the article thru' - its all about having infrastructure - if first world countries got involved and support the Kenya's - it will benefit the African continent cos it show what can be done an keep the bad guys from making political

a lot of stuff needs to come together if these african countries are going to make it - and its the old chicken and egg again - infrastructure and skills - there are a lot of dark forces at work on the african continent so the more the first world can do to give jobs and prosperity and show the advantages of the capitalist systems - the better it will be for everyone

don't get too concerned over infrastructure and business systems - the way the Chinese are moving and doing business - they'll be over there setting it up fairly soon and increasing their business influence whilst the rest of the world just sits and watches
