US economy under more Chinese control

Clipped to the Drawing Board by Bob Smith
Its an increasing fact of life that due to the current business environment, foreign companies are buying into the US economy and the Chinese are playing a significant role.

China has been making increasingly larger investments in some of the world's most prestigious financial companies in recent months — most of them American. Morgan Stanley, Bear Stearns, Blackstone Group, and Britain's Barclays have all negotiated major stakes by Chinese government-controlled investment funds.

As the US comes to terms with this new business environment schools across the country are scrambling to find people who can teach Chinese: It's quickly becoming business' second language as Wall Street seeks to tap China's $1.3 trillion in foreign reserves.

not just in the US - but across the world the Chinese are buying, setting up manufacturing plants and strategic business relationships so the US is just one part of a big movement - of course the question is - is this part of a co ordinated strategy or just random activities by a whole range of un coordinated Chinese companies and institutions

a lot depends on what industries - interestingly enough, this article focuses on financial institutions - not manufacturing companies - so we seem to be seeing a spread of investment - hard to gauge what the story is from just the one article - we need to look at the whole picture to get a better idea

we've seen this all before tho' really nothing new - it was only a few years ago that it was the Arabs - and the world was going to fall in and civilization collapse - so ride the wave - there will be peaks and troughs - I won't be losing to much sleep - money goes around

This is significant though because China is a much larger entity and they are doing more than just investing overseas. They are also putting a lot of resources into improving themselves locally. They are building a lot of universities and improving general infrastructure.

They are the worlds largest population and are a large supplier of cheap labor. We are seeing the start of a major shift for China and the rest of the world can't escape it's impact.

How is this going to affect business culture in the Western world? The Chinese have their own ways of doing things and if we're going to be partly owned by them and also potentially doing a lot more business with them then it's going to have an effect on the way we go about things.

More interesting is where this could be leading long term. There is a big push at the moment in space research. China could become a major player in this race and it's current actions may well be just preparations for something much larger.

maybe its just me seeing the worst scenario but yes - I think that China is a very different animal to the Arabs and the big question is - how will they use this influence - theres a lot of cunning in the way the Chinese operate - work your way in and then - softly softly catchee monkey - plus the other thing is that despite all of the talk about intellectual property rights - does anyone actually believe them so once they are in - could be access to a lot of sensitive information
Stan () Newbie | 2007-12-26 20:18:27
come on guys - talk about being paranoid - it's good to get the cash flowing back to the West - we either have a free and open society - or we don't - you can't start saying "we'll let you in" but "we won't let the other guy in" because we have a phobia - get real - plus look at recent history - it wasn't that long ago that the US was buying into every country in the world - just after WW2 when the world economy needed a kick stsrt
HarryHa () Newbie | 2007-12-26 20:24:05
China has been civilized for thousands of years - when the west was living in caves we had advanced civilization - we know how to behave with dignity and pride - China needs a strong West or nobody to sell to -ha, ha - so relax - business is business and we all do well remember also that China takes a lot of Western Hi Tech goods and services

so the business opportunity is to set up Chinese language and business schools in the US - see, every cloud has a silver lining - having traveled to China, its ironic that in China - the big push is English language and business schools - if they ever come together - thats a lot of talk and opportunity for business
Raj () Newbie | 2007-12-26 21:06:50
on slightly different tack, thats where Indians have advantage - English is the language of the educated business and technical classes - so they slot in very easily - so if the Indians start buying, language and business studies won't be an issue plus they are pretty well entrenched in the IT industry - maybe the Chinese are just the tip of the iceberg
